I have often wondered this as i would love to have a nice painted up engine one day! So what can you use/is best? Powder coating? Aerosole cans? Car paints ie clear over base, solid 2K etc? What have people used? What shouldn't be painted?
-
Used this on my classic mini worked a treat

Vht paint from Halfords is usually a good start, think some people use hammerite aswell but not 100% on that though
-
Keep the replies coming! I am a trained vehicle refinished so I was thinking of using 2K but I don't know if it would handle the heat?
-
2k i doubt would handle heat.. either brush or spray on hammerite ive used.. VHT paints are good as thats what they made for..

That's what I was worried about lol what is VHT? Can it be applied using a spray gun?
-
very high temp

AHHH! That would make sense!

2K topcoat will easily handle heat from most engines, and give a far superior finish to Hammerite, 1/2 a liter will be more than enough to do the job

Is that a definate Thom? If so thats great news because I would much rather use 2k

Where about in Devon are u dan? I used VHT on mine but even now if I run my hand over it, it still leaves colour on my hand as it's not quite gone off I think. It's only simoniz VHT I think, but I bought 6 tins and only used 2 and a bit if you want some for free.

100% the way to go, your engine will never exceed the working temps of 2k paint...
2 lights coats of etch primer
1 coat of 2k primer, tinted with some of the Topcoat colour
2 to 3 coats of your topcoat colour to finish

i just done my rocker cover in vht black but wasnt 2 happy with the finish so stripped it down and gonna get it powdercoated a different colour
-
Cheers for the comment mate! Let us know how much it cost! I'd be interested to know!

as thom said 2K all the way.
i've never had any luck with VHT and i it has stayed on it's allways looked crap,
powdercoating dosent like heat and oil it discolours and comes off also powdercoating an engine is a mission.
cellulose paint dosent like oil or fuel
do the prep get it clean and 2k it it'll stay shiney and it won't come off

Cheers for the advise! Although I may powder coat things like the sump, and pulleys etc...........
