Title: Cheap trolley jack?
Post by: jnufcuk on 10 September 2011, 20:17
Hi anyone know the best place to get a bog standard cheap trolley jack. Main reason being thst the normal jacks we have at home just aren't high enough for looking under the car

Was thinking eBay? But if anyone knows a better place please tell

Buying a jack can be a mine field of decisions. There's cheap, then expensive long reach, high lift etc. Took me ages to find my dream jack.

Don't rush into it. I know it's only a jack, but there will be offers on at certain retainers at different points. Of you can get a low profile jack, I would highly recommend it! (obviously if your car is lowered even slightly)I don't have one myself tbh, but do wish I had one as. Have to drive up onto two sets of blocks to get a normal 1t trolley jack underneath, and I'm only 60mm low. Pay the most u can afford to get your best choice. Don't scrimp like I did!

that's one pain of having a low car, i have to put it on 2 blocks of wood, then use a jack from a micra as it's lower then use a trolley jack, inch ground clearance isn't as fun to work on as it looks!

When you're jacking your car right up to 'look under it' you *are* using axle stands to support it safely, aren't you?

I would encourage you to not spend £20-30 on a jack, but more like £70-100 because you don't really want a dinky little 2t lift, you want a wide platform to lift your car on, both the saddle of the jack and also nice wide carriage wheels to ensure the jack is stable when loaded.

Clarke racing low profile jack is what I have and for. £100 I can't complain

I think it depends what you define as "Cheap". Halfrauds 2 tonne jack isn't a bad bit of kit for the price, but it will pale into insignificance against something from Clarke costing 4 or 5 times as much. Horses for courses.  :nerd:

Lidl have one sometimes for £15, it works and no matter how cheap or expensive the trolley jack is, always use axle stands, my old one was a good one, cant remember make but it still dropped on me without warning. good job axle stands were there

Oh and be careful where you jack... you dont want holes in your floor. (If you have a mk3 you already have these).

Always spread the load with a piece of wood if the jack in question has a narrow lifting platform.

Ye used axle stands lol. Not that dopey :). Just the jack got to it's limit and I would of liked it just a lil bit higher to make it easier to see things.
ATM car is not lowered but near future will be but only like 30-40 mm
