Thinking of buying another mk3 TDi as a cheap daily as I've got a commute now. Ideally looking for an estate. Was looking at an AHU engined TDi, obviously rust is something to keep an eye out for and general 2nd hand car issues.
Not too up on the TDi's though, engines are supposed to be bullet proof if cared for just wondered if there was anybody who could advise me on anything specific to watch out for?
Also is the claimed 50mpg+ realistic? I'll be doing mostly motorway miles.

I'm also trying to find a decent GL TDI estate and yeah they're good solid lumps which can be tweaked for power and still retain some kind of reasonable economy. 50-60 mpg Is very plausible.

Very strong engines, just check for good service history.
50mpg with ease.

love my ahu :)! 50+ mpg on runs fine :) mine just a nightmare for rusting :( for only 90bhp still fun to drive! just wish was an estate for a bit more room lol!
-
love my ahu :)! 50+ mpg on runs only done 135k few mods to do on it soon like up grading the turbo (150 bhp pd ) and doing a full gti brakes all round .

yep i have one (ahu) mine on 170k now and mates is on 203k they love it.

So an enthusiastic thumbs up there. I keep finding them but they're all a million miles away from me

I couldn't ask for a better car for an all round daily runaround.
Would genuinely reccommend to anyone.

I picked up my daily 1996 tdi in May for only £400, it's a bit tatty but I've done 7k in her with no problems
Last tank I got 692 miles from her 55 litre tank, very impressed and I'm doing pretty much around the 60mpg mark
My mate who's a mechanic has the same car and believes these engines were built to last

I've been to look at a couple and they've either been too expensive or rotten beyond redemption. Body work doesn't phase me but it's supposed to be a cheap daily not a full on resto. Away to look at a 98 pissrat estate, like a golf but not a golf
