Just had my first towing experience. Didn't really like it was a very weird feeling lol. Luckily was only a 5min drive to house. Only had a rope not a rigid bar Looks like the clutch cable has snapped (2000 w reg Clio) Any suggestions?

Get a new clutch cable.
Also, check your licence, I checked mine and I'm not legally allowed to tow what I have towed in the past
-
dont think towing on a rope is legal these days anyway

The only reason I found out, is my bird has done her hgv so that she can drive the large horse box. She told me about all the entitlements that they discussed, so I checked mine and I was shocked. I've towed so much that I shouldn't have done as I didn't know that I'd have to do another licence for towing.

Not specifically illegal as far as I know, but if plod decide it's an unsafe condition, they are within their rights to do you....
Many places still sell tow rope...

towing pole is infinitely safer. Jury out on whether tow ropes are illegal or not. Consensus on police forum is that there is no specific legislation saying they (tow ropes) are illegal but it seems that common sense and officer discretion come into it a fair bit.

Depends if we're talking tow bars that you buy in Halfords or not.
Tow bars you buy in Halfords, give me a rope and a decent driver anyday, proper tow bars that people like the AA use, they're alright.

What's wrong with the Halfords ones?

Just dislike them. No give in them at all. My dad used one to tow his mates Transit off a hard shoulder. As we're going off a slip road, his mate in the Transit makes a mistake think his hand slipped off the wheel or something and it just jolted the back of the Chrysler out. Lucky my dad just accelerated out of it.
The RAC ones I've seen have a bit of play so its miles safer as long as the tow car is both heavy enough and within its towing weights.
I've towed stuff with a Corsa but no way I'd use a bar on that as its such a light car! Just use a rope.

towed a corsa c with a broken gearbox, was using a rover 75 2.0 td auto, didn't even feel like you were towing until you looked behind at the corsa!

Common sense applies when towing, but there are a lot of ignorant people out there.
You see some crackers out on the road, people using washing line, towing with hazard warning lights etc. :undecided:
