Im not sure what your asking exactly.
Has someone asked you to supply a car for ~8.96% off?

Just reread it and now understand.
You have offered ~9% off and they have not ordered.
The discount of 8.96% seems good to me from a main dealer public side rather than fleet side.

I've voted 'YES'. But it would be even better value if it was a GTI.

Its a factory order specific car customer is ordering. Those were the days back in 2009/2010 things were cheap.....er then.

The dealer who ordered yours would of ordered it on 2009 prices aswell ; )

I'm with R32. £27k for a Golf is bad enough. But a Golf diesel!!!!!????

The world has finally gone mad. If you can afford to spend £27k why the hell is he worrying about the cost of his fuel consumption?

Title: Re: Is this a fair offer?........
Post by: mac7 on 09 September 2011, 19:08
Agreed, good spec. Got to be honest though, I did expect it to have the RNS, leather or DSG for just under £30K list. But it is a better car without most of those.

I still think the GTD is overpriced in relation to the GTI though.

Lee, I take it you wrote that in front of the customer and are hoping to show him the "Yes its a bargain" result?   Or does he frequent here?

Not knocking your trade as someone has to do it  but it is so characteristic of salesmen talk. "This is the best deal you'll  get ever but its on the table for this day only"
Title: Re: Is this a fair offer?........
Post by: evo1986 on 09 September 2011, 21:23
Yes customer is on here......... But I don't think he appreciates how competitive the offer is. The offer has been on the table for a few days and whilst we only have one allocation left to order one of these cars left for the next two months I hope he decides soon otherwise it's going to take a very long time to arrive.......

By the looks of it the only place cheaper is a broker buy £120.74 but guaranteed they won't be able to place the order for months......
Title: Re: Is this a fair offer?........
Post by: Snoopy on 09 September 2011, 21:34
For that £120 and knowing how your willing to help people out and keep them informed i would go with your offer or at least ask you to split the difference if it was me personally.
Title: Re: Is this a fair offer?........
Post by: am1w on 09 September 2011, 21:41
Lee: The 'spec' is exactly as I would have ordered except for those awful mudflaps. It's a very competitive price for an 'immediate' delivery. Give him/her a full tank of Diesel and he'll/she'll clinch the deal, hopefully. IMO it's as good as it gets. Otherwise, his/her loss.

Tell the customer you don't provide blood out of stone and you are a business and not a charity.

Title: Re: Is this a fair offer?........
Post by: PenguinGTI on 10 September 2011, 02:41
2 Aspects to this Lee that people seem to be picking up on. The first - and most relevant - is whether the discount you are offering is reasonable on the car you are selling. 10% is a fairly decent offer but I will be honest and say that I'm the type of person that always looks for just a bit more. I think if you offered some courtesies such as a free full tank of fuel or some paintwork protection then it might be the icing on the cake. I do think however that in terms of actual *money off* I think you're deal is pretty good.

The second aspect is the nigh-on-incredulous prices of the cars. I have to be honest and say that £27k for a diesel Golf is a bit daft. In no way do I wish to criticise the GTD as it is a fantastic car but at the end of the day, it's a 2.0 TDI Golf with different seats, a bodykit and some badges. I have heard recently the advert on the radio for the "fantastic VW value" which lets people get into a new Golf for £14k. I have to laugh when I then read about a diesel Golf priced just under £30k. So with the spec list you provided and a budget of £30k I went shopping...

Here's what I found (all spec'd brand new on the manufacturer's website). Where I was unable to specify an option I have mentioned it:

BMW 320d ES Saloon (182HP) minus colour multifunction display, flat tyre indicator and dynaudio £29,980

BMW 120d ES Coupe (174HP) minus colour multifunction display, flat tyre indicator and dynaudio £26,175

BMW 120d Sport Hatch (181HP) £27,770

Audi A3 Sport 2.0 TDI (170HP) £25,585

Audi A3 Sport 2.0 TDI (170HP) Quattro minus colour multifunction display £27,130

Seat Leon FR 2.0 TDI (170HP) minus colour multifunction display, flat tyre indicator and dynaudio £21,710

Vauxhall Astra GTC SRI 2.0 CDTI (165PS) minus colour multifunction display, cruise control and flat tyre indicator £23,560

Ford Focus Titanium X 2.0 TDCI (163PS) minus colour multifunction display and flat tyre indicator but with metallic paint £22,745

*These are just list prices and quite possibly could be haggled to lower figures.

Now I started the list with some cars which are more in keeping with the 'prestige' of the GTD badge. BMW don't do proper 'M' diesels (not yet anyway) so I just picked an engine with the closest amount of power to the Golf. I then progressed to the A3 and the FR - both siblings to the Golf - although Audi don't do a special badged diesel model. I then looked at cars which might compete with the Golf in terms of size although if I'm honest then the Vauxhall and Ford can probably be dismissed on terms of quality.

My point however is that for the nigh on £30k that VW want for that particularly spec'd GTD, there are some seriously tempting options from other marques and the cars which are perhaps the truest rivals to the Golf (namely the Astra and the Focus) are both seriously cheaper.

Wake up VW!

An excellent post there Mr Penguin, very well thought out and researched.

BUT this quote from Lee says it all:
Spoke to my mate who went to work for Mazda is south Wales they are on there arse. Volkswagen on other hand is a very busy place we sell 25-30 cars every week and could do alot more if we could get the stock.

People obviously want VWs, and they want them badly enough to pay for them. Now I'm not for a minute going to assume I'm a typical car buyer because I'm pretty much the opposite of that!! But I used to work in the trade many years ago and know how the market has changed completely in that time. Modern car buyers are well catered for by VW et al with their slick hire contracts. Not many people pay cash from their savings for a car in this day and age and the previous generation's post war 'if you can't afford it don't have it' attitude has now long gone. Modern society is a borrowing society (and interest on savings is a non starter anyway) so people have contracts for everything. List price isn't looked at by many buyers as that significant, they merely look at how they are going to manage to pay the monthly rental on their desired consumer product.
I'll compare the Golf GTI/D/R (possibly Golfs in general as they seem pretty much in demand whatever model) with an iPhone. For whatever reason they are held in high esteem by the population in general despite their high price and people will be prepared to pay quite a high monthly contract charge on the thing just so they can be seen with one. Many of these people will never use the full features of the product and will in private cristise the thing and the whole charade but due to pressure from various angles (fashion, marketing etc) they feel compelled to 'own' one.
So there's an awful lot of people out there who pay £40+ a month on an iPhone contract that would get by just as happily with a £10 a month contract with an equally impressive phone from a less trendy brand.
And the same goes with houses which have been forced up in price massively thanks to our borrowing culture and the 'must have' mentality drilled in to consumers.

So fair play Apple and VW, you've played us a blinder, well done!

Seems a decent spec but i think one thing that lets it down is that its red. I like red gti's gtd's but i wouldn't buy one, if that car was black or carbon grey it would sell itself. Their have been 3 brand new unregistered red gti's on Autotrader for 2/3 months now not big spec i know but with discount, i guarantee if they were black or carbon grey they would have sold within 2-3 weeks. I would have brought one for a start

Title: Re: Is this a fair offer?........
Post by: dubber36 on 10 September 2011, 08:52
I think Exonian has it bang on.

I used to be in the trade around 15 years ago, and I remember talking to a salesman who had just started at VW. He said it was the easiest place he'd ever worked. Most people came in with their hands up and wallets open, and if they didn't, the next person in through the door would.
Title: Re: Is this a fair offer?........
Post by: Snoopy on 10 September 2011, 09:48
^ Thats basically what my local dealer said to me in 2009 after i test drove the GTI.
He said he could sell everyone he could get his hands on, so no need to discount. And if by magic as i was looking round the black one in the showroom a lad who was also looking at it paid the sticker price.

Completely agree with you Exonian. The trouble is that VW can get away with those types of price because people keep on buying. So really I should rephrase my finishing comment to wake up us!

Lee - glad you've filled your allocation. TBH I think the buyer has missed out. Just out of interest, what were the prices of the two Ed35's you've sold. I'm just curious to see if they are going over the £30k mark.
Title: Re: Is this a fair offer?........
Post by: Jimmymature on 10 September 2011, 13:52

This is an odd thread in that it asks was the deal good.  The deal was good for a VW dealer and car.  The post fro Penguin highlight the alternatives and really brings it home.

VW is in serious risk of alienating new customers and its existing customers.  £30k+ for a Golf? Mad, £30k+ gets you a Jag XF etc.

You can walk into a BMW dealership and order a car and you will have it 8 weeks tops!, with VW you're lucky if its within 8 months.

I'm a little embarrassed to think how pretentious VW have become, GET REAL VW....

Both with standard wheels but darker versions.

Yo, can I just say a car cost you what it looses and not what you pay for it*.Top gear should remember this when the price compare cars. Not directed at any post, I can't be bothered doing all the maths. Just a thought.

*unless your paying cash with money from your piggy bank.

Actually I do know a mondeo titanium x is about 22-24,000 with bits new but a 3 year old one with 27000 miles is worth £7400 (trade, my pals just bought one). Where an 09 golf gti £27000~ new with 24000 miles on it are about (guessing) £17000~. Mondeo not as good and more expensive, boooo!

Also a golf for £27000 should come with ever option available but then it would be built like a datsun, but you are correct.

It could be one or more of the following:

(1) He's playing the waiting game and thinks this can squeeze a bit more discount.
Or,
(2) He's changed his mind and bought a Jag! It's supposed to be cheaper and extra long.
Or,
(3) He could not afford it in the first place and is a messer.
Or,
(4)
He's dead, God forbid.

You'll sell it with ease especially as it is Red and has very decent kit and is priced right (though expensive).
I think it's a good deal for our newly initiated Premium VW Brand.

How anyone can think VW is a premium brand is beyond me!!!!!

I don't think it's premium every time I go to Germany and I see millions of them - common as muck!!!

Every other car is a BMW and they seem to be classed as premium.
I don't think VW are premium myself.

Not sure if VW are "premium" either.

They are good, solid cars with soul and personality.
