Jay, you might be able to help me out here as this is PC related
i have Macs as you well know, but i also have a Compaq Presario V6500 which i use just for internet use and to download my music for my DJ sets etc
Reason for this is i try keep my Mac just for music based programs and not browsing the net etc
right on to the problem
was browsing this site last night and all of a suddern the screen when Grey and non of the buttons would do anything.
I shut it down by holding the power button and when i try to restart it, all the lights light up but go off after about a second and thats all - basically cant even get it to start up. fans dont kick in or anything
any ideas ? really need info off the HD too, what can i use to hook it up to another laptop
its running on Windows 7 ultimate with a AMD 64x2 chip annd is about 4 years old
any pointers would be great and i appreciate any help
-
You could take the HDD out and buy a caddy case and recover the info off it there. Im sure Jay will be able to help, but thats just an idea!

Sounds like either the CPU or motherboard has fried unfortunately. To connect HD to laptop you can get an external 'housing' http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Drive+Enclosures/External+%28For+SATA+Drive%29/Icy+Box++IB-318StUS2-B+External+Enclosure+for+3.5%22+SATA+HDD+?productId=35986
something like that , that will access the drive via the usb on the laptop.

has the comp been overclocked or anything ? you could try resetting the CMOS see if it will boot

You know how to use the ruler you have next to it, yeah?

Do you know the make/manufacture of the motherboard m8 ? if not have a look on the board for a jumper/switch thats says clear cmos , it will have 3 pins and the plastic jumper will be covering 2 of them. switch it over then power up , it wont start up but will clear its cmos. Switch it back to original position then try to boot again. It prob wont work but its worht a try.
-
im not sure on the make of it, but found this on the bay, im not gonna buy it but its the same model as mine i have here

@Ant, please fook off. not looking for the sacastic waste of time replies on this thread. if i was good with PC i would not be asking stuff on here
-
Ah I did not realise it was a laptop , im not sure if you can do this on a laptop.
If you can get to the motherboard easily you should see a small battery (circular one) , remove it for a few mins , replace then try again , this will have the same effect .
-
yeah iv seen the little batery thing mate cheers will try it

At first look, it seems like that ruler has seen better days. On further inspection, and judging by the colour of it.... i would say that measuring a HD probably is one of its better days

@Ant, please fook off. not looking for the sacastic waste of time replies on this thread. if i was good with PC and a ruler and had any common sense i would not be asking stuff on here
Well, don't put a ruler up to it showing 2.5", then ask us what size it is then

but its not showing that... if he actually started measuring from 0" then we would have a better idea of what size it is

It is, perspective, the HD isn't flat ;)

Don't be such a pedant, Guy. If the OP could use Google he'd realise there are two generic HD sizes, 2.5" and 3.5" (even in dipstick Macland). This is clearly not a 3.5" unit so it must be the first.
Sadly the OP is unable to use Google or common sense.
Put it in a £20 caddy from Maplins, plug it in another PC, read the files just like on a USB stick.
Or plug it in and weep, if it's toast.
-
It might be 3.5 inches long!
-
what you need is one of these
http://www.kenable.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=4197
lets you plug any hard drive (sata or IDE 2.5 or 3.5) in via usb.
-
what, no backup ?
-
plug it into an external monitor or TV.
It could be a number of things wrong, graphics card, CPU, RAM or motherboard and without having compatible parts to hand you'll be hard pressed to find which of these it could be. You could get it repaired but it'll cost 1/2 the price of a new laptop.
As others have said best to get a 2.5" SATA external caddy and get all your data off it, you can then use it as a portable drive when you've got your data back
This is why we always either upsell warranty extensions to older machines if people don't want to buy new machines or sell machines with full engineer on-site next business day warranties
what, no backup ?
I should get round to that someday :lipsrsealed:

i did a back up the other week but theirs recent thing i need desperate
Cheers Jay, ill look into it but i think its the end of the road for the Compaq
-
Could be interested in it if you're gonna get rid mate. Would have to be next week though. Personally, I'd say if no beeps etc CPU or motherboard.
-
only thing that happens when u press power button is all lights come on as normal then 1 second later they all go off as tho its shutting itself down again
laptop was expensive when new, circa 850 quid its a shame its come to this, my mates HP did the exact same, ill never own one again
Had a compaq before this one and it was solid but the new one was made under HP
its in next to mint condition too
been looking at a DELL E4300
need a PC for Acid Pro and Soundforge or id just not bother with another, and get another Mac book Pro instead for my music and DJ stuff and use my current Powerbook for replacing the Compaq
-
cheers for the imput mate
iv tried to boot it up with and without the HD installed and its the same either way
battery takes charge still when its plugged nto the AC adapter tho
-
drop it off to me mate i will get it checked out for you, got a great contact and can have it back to you for end of next week
-
Am I right in thinking that the SATA connection on a laptop HDD is the same as a desktop?
If so & you fancy a trip down to Donny I'll wack it in my comp, copy the files to my PC & can either burn them to DVD or stick them on an external HDD or USB drive for you?
-
and off we go again, same name appearing yet again,
Kells, can u PM jay as this is getting locked. Sorry
