Title: Golf 2.8 VR6 Auto Gearbox Issues
Post by: deswamp on 08 September 2011, 08:26
Hi All,

I'm living in Malaysia and I just took the plunge on a VR6 about 2 months ago but unfortunately its turning into something of a nightmare.

The transmission tended to stick in 3rd gear so it took it to a VW dealer. They performed a diagnostic on it and told me that the Valve Body was defective and would require a new gearbox. The price quoted by VW Malaysia of this new from Germany is huge, about 7500 pounds.

There is an oil seal that is being replaced and the xmission has lost a fair quantity of oil. I'm hoping that this will fix it but VW have told me that is is unrelated.

Has anyone out there had similar issues and what was the answer?
Is it possible to repair the valve body? Or even to get a new valve body without replacing the entire gearbox?
Finally, does anyone know of a gearbox supplier that would have these parts (or a whole 'box) in stock and what the price would be?

I could do with some guidance VW-brothers!

Cheers

I'm pretty sure you can replace the valve body without replacing the gearbox.
You can on the Audi, so i would expect vw to be the same.

Can you look up your gearbox code?
If you can i'll get some information up on removing the valve body.

The valve body can be removed and replaced while the gearbox is still in the car.
It could be expensive to buy parts, so is it worth looking for a second hand box?
First make sure oil and filter is changed, this can make a big difference!!

The valve body has 2 part numbers for DMA gearbox,

01M 325 039F
01M 325 039FX

I don't know the difference, but don't expect either to be cheap!

Thanks very much for the feedback, its very helpful.

Any idea of a ballpark figure for the valve body?

Checked out the valve part numbers, one is $1100, the other is $700 :0

A noob question, the gearbox code is DMA, what is this the part number I would use if I was looking for a quote for a 2nd hand gearbox?

The prices are as expected.
I would expect any 4 speed vw auto box with DMA code should fit.

Try a oil and filter change first, this may solve your problem.
Also, i read on the Audi forum, that people were dropping the valve body out of the box and cleaning it out, this may be a possibility.

Hey i just had a 1996 vw vr6 auto gearbox put in a 1997 and im having a couple of problems on the RPM. The first two gears work like a dream but when its switching to 3rd it won't change to fourth untill about 4500 rpm or if i lay off the pedal a bit right after 3000. I was curious if maybe i need a new ecu or maybe its the timer unit? Any ideas?
