Title: Are cars with no tax/mot worth anything whole?
Post by: chiefwhosm on 07 September 2011, 21:00
Hi,
So not a What's it worth thread, but more a query.

I'm debating about selling me 1.4 and 1.9D golfs, in each case they are SORNed and have no MOT, so I'm wondering if that makes them worth anything or whether I'd only get value for them if they had full mot and road tax (which of course may mean expense getting them road worthy).

Mechanically I'm sure they're worth more than £0 but, from a buyers perspective I'm not so sure.

I realise alot of people here would claim a 1.4 is worthless just for the cheap prices of the 8/16v's these days, but the 1.9D cost me nothing (free from a work mate) and the 1.4 was only £100 for a 77k engine and allots, so would I get anything for it?

I gather scrap merchants at the moment only offer £65 for each car they collect.

Okay, so that started to become a what's it worth thread towards the end so I'll quit before I fall into that fully ;)

Chief :)

with no mot (or fail sheet) then scrap value..... it could be worth trying to mot them and then see what needs doing (and possibly making 1 good car from 2 and scrapping whats left)

The problem there lies in that I'm in a rural location, no breakers yard, there is a guy (dont know who) who will pickup and trailer away cars (but its a round trip of over 200 miles) so I don't know how much that would get me.

Well, this is where the problem lies as well in that I'm unsure:

1.4 K-reg:

The passenger wing near the sills is rusted completely into rather bendable (if not breakable) metal.

The sills seem mostly solid, but the screwdriver did go through one area (the car has the GTI side trim on, but underneath had been waxoyled or some such stuff to protect them, but it hasn't worked for all the metal).

Mechanically it's probably very good under the bonnet as it was owned by a family of mechanics, story about the 77k engine is that one of the sensors failed, so instead of replacing the sensor the owner replaced the entire engine.

1.9 P-reg:

If you turn the steering wheel in either direction, after a while it goes SPLOINGGGGGGgggg, I'm told by a VW mechanic that it could mean either there's a problem, or there's nothing wrong with it since he's had cars that did the noise which were fine, and others that were not so fine.

The brakes are probably in need of repair after it has sat for almost 18 months.

It still starts, and sounds okay when running.

No airbag, nor resistor so the airbag warning lamp is on.

Large rust holes have been welded on the chassis, but due to recent water ingress thanks to the wind ripping off my weather proofing bin bags, these have surface rust again.

Half-way through a respray, so it looks interesting - mix of old paint and new (hence why the doors were off when the rain happened and rusted the chassis again as mentioned above - unfortunately the wind and rain made it impossible to get it dry again till recently).

All the interior however was fine as it's sitting next to me indoors :)

Chief.

Stick them both on ebay whole for spares or repair, someone might want a 1.9 d engine for soemthing. They have to collect so theres nothing to worry about. You also get people with trailer facilitys that are close by that might just weight them in.Either way you will make some money id say.

You could also strip them yourself and sell them on ebay if you have the time or inclination.Being a non gti your market is limited, but glass and good body panels and dash parts and electrics always tend to sell.

Where are you based?

I will offer you £150 for both and collect them if your local-ish.

I'm just off the Mull of Kintyre

I realise the market is limited, but I'd prefer not to scrap/dismantle/set fire to   them if I'm honest, I just couldn't bring myself to demolish the 1.4 after I bought it for parts because it was in such a reasonable shape.

Shame its not a tdi Chief. The crank out of them is worth £150 all day long!
Unless you have the time and space to strip them and sell the parts them you may as well take up the offer that has been made.

I think the offer will get retracted somehow, when they notice the round trip of 800+ miles

Is that even in the UK?

Nevermind, but you should have no problems getting rid to someone in your area.
