I`m getting what i can best describe is a hollow knocking sound which i only notice when the engines cold. It only happens when i`m pulling away and only last for about a mile or so, Its starting to annoy me now not knowing what it is.
-
Does it relate to wheel speed or engine, roughly what area of the car?
-
I`d say it relates to the engine speed and it sounds like its coming from the engine bay
-
knocking normally means the bottom end is on its way out
-
I could under stand that if it was knocking all the time or getting worse. It just started suddenly about 3 weeks ago but it isn`t getting any worse
-
Get the oil pressure checked but it sounds like a big end bearing problem.
-
If there any play in the power steering pump pulley? in my old car i got a knocking sort of noise at idle, and the bearing in the pump had worn and allowing the pulley to move.
-
Drop the sump and have a look :)
That was the sound my Celica made when the big ends went :(
-
I almost certian its not the bearing i`ve had some go on me before and it sounded differant to this knocking
-
Does it smoke when you first start it? It could be Piston slap or small end bearing wear.

I havn`t noticed any smoke on start up but i`ll take note tomorrow when i finish work.

Thrust bearing?
-
Golfs dont have a thrust bearing
EDIT
Sorry yes they do
If it was the thrust bearing it would rattle all the time

Golfs dont have a thrust bearing
?? Mines knocks when you give a good old rev...when you have your foot on the clutch on in gear...the noise disappears. I though this was just the thrust bearing needing changed.
-
i went to german swedish the other day to get a new thrust bearing when i thought my main oil seal had gone when it hadnt anyway they said the thrust bearing on my car was some plastic thing.
-
sounds like a sticky tappet to me. Is it a kind of donk donk donk noise? (thats the best way I can think to describe the sound of a sticky tappet.) Stick your head under the bonnet and see if you can locate the noise. If its tappet you will easily here it coming from the top of the engine.

i get that sometimes. easy to fix?
-
The tricky part is locating the dodgy one(s). Easiest to get a whole new set. Rocker cover off cambelt off then cam bearing caps. Pull out the old and in with new. Make sure they have been immersed in engine oil for a half hour first. Then once in leave the car an hour to let them settle before starting.
