do any electronics work when turned off? (battery connected obviously)

The battery is a part of the circuit, so it should stop if it's disconnected, unless these cars have a bypass to keep you going, which they might well do.

is it a diesel?

My thought. If it was it wouldn't cut the engine.

Then it's dieseling (self fuelling)

Check all your oil levels, seals on turbos and compression on cylinders. Try not to drive it anywhere as it runs a chance of running off and the only way to stop it will be to dump the clutch in 5th when the car is standing still and hope the gearbox can take it. Needless to say doing all of this whilst it's ragging it's head off is quite stressful.

sounds like to me that the alternator is providing power to the engine when the battery is disconnected. So alternator is fine then aint it? if the alternator was farked then the engine would have cut out as soon as i disconnected the battery

So its a 1.9D Turbo. They are mechanical injection with no ECU. Get the multimeter out.

compressions on cylinders? whys that as when i bump started it (roll down 2nd gear release the clutch, bang car started) the car started up straight away and we left it running for over half hour and then turn it off then waited a few seconds and started it, it did struggle but it started.
oil level is fine, seals on turbs, we cant check that as i cant.

one thing that did come up when the it wouldnt start was "economy mode active" but then after a half hour of having it srated that message went away.

Sound like it just needs a new battery, have you had the battery tested?

Aye, get a multimeter across the battery just to double check.

Diesels don't need an electrical source (battery) to run in their basic function once they have been started, so disconnecting it won't do owt.

il get a mulimeter on to it, if the cars started the voltage should be about 12v+? if its started it should be running higher (eg. 14.4v) ??

Anything above 13V when started would suggest the charging system is in working order.

Can take the battery off my Golf when running and it will be fine. The alternator provides sufficient current. Not advisable to do mind. I have however used this to start a flat Polo with no jump leads.
