I have a bit of pinking on my 8v 97 model when it gets hot. After reading a few posts on here i'm thinking it may be the temperature sensor but i'm wondering if this would come up as a fault on a code reader as mine shows no faults.
Is it possible that it would'nt show as a fault and if so can someone tell me where it is located ?.It's an AGG engine.
I do know the timing is slightly out as the rotor arm is in the wrong place when i set the crank/camshaft timing marks but it is only a tiny bit out which i do'nt think is causing the problem i have.Distributor is seized so i have 2 things to sort

Could be a knackered knock sensor?
-
if i was you, i would get the distributor and timing, sorted out first as this could pay a big part of it! good luck
-
As above, its probably down to the timing been out.
-
how do you know its pinking?
Get the base timing sorted first!!
re the temp sensor - does the dash gauge work, i.e. comes up to 90c quickly? Temp sensor fault unless very faulty (i.e. broken wire etc) doesn't show as a fault on the mk3 in my experience.

Thanks for all the replies.I'm going to sort the seized dizzy out first and reset the timing.I'm hoping it's that but i would be surprised if it is because it is only out a very very tiny amount, less than the thickness of a McDonalds coffee stirrer
The temp gauge works fine, plugs are as they should be,loses no water or oil and pulls well,(better than my last one in fact). It just pinks when it gets hot.

Sure its pinking? Not detonation? They sound the same.

The timing should be ok if you can rev the engine pass 5000rpm on a AGG engine. Get it checked on vagcom before you start messing with it. If you do decide to move the dizzy, mark the base of the dizzy and the block so you can return it to the original settings, because it can be a bugger to get right without vagcom to set it.,

i thought pinking and pre-detonation were the same thing? :undecided:

diffrent aint they?
i get the same when the cars hot (90 degs) and going up hit and revs are low it will pink, but ive had vaj on it and checked the engine side of things and nothing comes up :undecided:

Got loaads of info on it from college.
Basically pinking is pre detonation and detonation is where it insights with the spark but the "field of ignition" or like the pattern if he pressure isn't smooth.
Thus you get the same noise.
Can be many things.
What does it sound like?
