Title: Next car- G6 Gti DSG *Taking delivery tomorrow*
Post by: gabrialboy on 04 September 2011, 19:17
Hi Gents,

Well 8 months down the line in my new Championship Ed Honda Civic Type R and I have the urge to swop cogs into a Gti... :cool:The 2nd time now I'm considering the Golf. The previous round it lost out to my ex S3...
As a petrol head at heart I've been fortunate in owning quite a few hatches over the past 5 years but my choices were all specific at the time....

The CTR is too focussed for my needs at the moment. In comparison to my ex rides it's a great hatch but with the constant traffic I'm facing on a daily basis I'm leaning towards getting an auto or dsg box.
Also considering practicality and not interested in getting another 2 door hatch.
My shortlist include:

New United Grey G6 Gti DSG- xenons, RCD510, Sunroof, Bluetooth
New Light White MINI Countryman S Auto- Sunroof, Chilli Pack, PDC & Centre Armrest
2010 Merc C350 AMG with low mileage-

Need some opinions and thoughts from the owners out there whether you'd buy another Gti again given the choices I have...
Shot  :nerd:

Looking at your past rides i would probably go for the edition 35 DSG GTI.
Im not a fan of the countrymen a mate has the clubmen S and he use to have a JCW S before that both good cars but just lacking comfort for me.

I'd get the GTI or go the whole hog and get an R. The Ed35 is a halfway house between the GTI and the R.
Oh, I dislike  all those wheels that come with the Ed35.
This is my considered opinion.

Thx for the replies... was actually referring to the sticky on this topic as I only discovered it after posting this thread... Was considering an R but waiting period too long... unfortunately we don't get the 35th Ed over here in SA...From what I've researched I don't see the R justifying the price premium over the Gti... 4 motion and exclusivity not worth it imho.... reckon that the Gti strikes the best balance in performance and comfort looking at the options out there... was keen on the candy white but there's just too many of them out there so I've decided that if I settle on the Golf it'll have to be my personal favourite colour for the Gti United Grey...
Was also thinking of the 135i but will be a used one and I'm not the biggest BM fan. Then I'm also stuck with only 2 doors again so have decided to eliminate the bimmer from the shortlist...

ED35 or the Merc the ed35 is going to be a blinding motor

Steve: The Ed35 is not available in SA.

I've also got a Mercedes C Class 350 CDI AMG Sport Auto. Prefer my GTI.

so i sorted out most of the paperwork today and my new gti is due for delivery tomorrow so chances are I'm collecting on the weekend.
My timing was spot on it seems as a batch has just arrived into the country... only problem was I couldn't get the RCD510 as there were no UG units in the batch with sunroof, xenons & rcd510. So had to scratch the radio upgrade from my options list-
whooohooo getting excited now... x mas is early this year....

Nice one mate, I wouldnt worry about the RCD510 mate, get an RNS510 sat nav unit for £550 from one of the guys here.  Many of us have and it's well worth it.

thanks gents,

2 more sleeps-
Dealer sent me these today....

Just need to confirm the following on the rcd 310... I've noticed that there's been a small change on these units- black and blue backlighting... I'm not sure whether mine is the latest and would like to confirm this beforehand... Was under the impression that the car was shipped up from the port today but apparently the dealer sourced the vehicle from another dealership. I need clarification of this tomorrow... so holding thumbs everything is as I was expecting :undecided:

Yep I've seen a few guys having done this mod locally already... seems like a PIA though as there's some resistors/transformers to be fitted (and I don't no jack sh!t about auto electrical things) So will have to find someone to do this for me...

I would expect like other VW golfs the software for the LED lights is already in the cars computer.
To change to the LED rear lights in europe from the older non LED ones you simply buy adaptor leads (to change from one type of plug to another nothing more) and change a setting in the cars computer to let it know you have LED rear lights.
Here is a how too
http://www.mk6golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,81.0.html
and i bought the adaptor leads from
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-6-VI-LED-R-Ruckleuchten-Satz-Adapter-/170535335992?pt=DE_Autoteile&hash=item27b4b2b838

Dealer sent me this pic as confirmation so seems like I got the latest spec which I am relieved about...

Agreed Snoopy, so was pleasantly surprised as I was unaware of the change until earlier this week when I found these pics and was thinking but that's a rcd310 sized radio? ... it blends in nicely with the rest of dash... so happy with that. Will consider the RNS510 upgrade at a later stage but at least until then I'll be content with the 310- the older blue one would've reminded me everyday that I didn't get the 510... :undecided: So it's a nice surprise... :smug:

Be content. You'll hate the sound quality of the RNS510. I did. It's pretty rubbish compared to the RCD310.
You need to spec Dynaudio with the RCD510/RNS510 for decent sound. This is the bare minimum for acceptable sound quality.

The RCD310 matches the standard speakers very well and vice versa.

I've also heard the RCD510 + DAB radio with the standard speakers and the resulting sound is most disappointing. Just as hopeless as that from the RNS510.

I had to spend many thousands of £s to sort my sound system due to the terrible quality sound from the RNS510. (See my signature). An aftermarket Sat Nav would be much better soundwise than the RNS510.

I have a brilliant sound system now: but the cost was a bit eye watering.

Thanks for the heads up bud, was not aware that the RCD510 head unit impacted the sound quality of the standard speaker set up...

so what an exciting day it was today.... collection went smoothly and me and the misses took a leisurely drive back to jo'burg. Super stoked with the car and first thing I said was that it "feels like home again". Best of both worlds, classy and fast. Absorbs the bumps pretty well and not bone jarring harsh...LOVE IT! Obviously I'm taking it easy and just enjoying the car and getting a feel for her.

Noticed that I have LED number plate lights as well...noice!

Pix at collection this morning- salesman was tops (took him a nice 07 numbered bottle of red for all his hard work this week)
Will take some pix after the 1st polish and wax.
This morning at the dealership-

Congratulations gabrialboy and welcome as a full member of the GTI Club.
Run her in for the first 1000 miles keeping revs below 4000 and then let fly.
How does the RCD310 sound?

thanks bud, well sounds better than my CTR's audio system  so no complaints there. Will try my best to keep the revs sub 4000 rpm but even in D mode that challenging. Have only been driving in D- and will keep it out of S for sometime...

I gave mine a bottle as well as he had activated the telephone prep on the car for my bluetooth ready for me just to plug it in.

It also meant any wee niggles I had in the first few weeks were dealt with without any hassles.

Keep them sweet, it always pays.

If i'd bought mine from the dealer where I live I'd have given the saleswoman a lift back to mine!

As it was, I was sold mine by a grumpy bastard 30 miles away who wouldnt even give me a free GTI keyring!!!
