Title: Tyre Suggestions
Post by: JMann on 04 September 2011, 15:15
Hi all,

Whilst cleaning my car today I noticed that one of my front passenger wheels is very close to the limit of wear, and needs replacement. My car (Golf MK6 GT TDI 140) currently has on it Dunlop Super Sports Maxx (225/40ZR18) so I thought about going for the same again but from looking at reviews on the net this afternoon people are slating them in every way possible, but not suggesting any alternatives.

I will replace both front tyres if I change type, the rears will have to stay on for a few more thousand yet as they still have plenty of tread. Do you have any suggestions for some good tyres? I don't do massive miles (10k year), mostly town driving the odd motorway drive when required. I have noticed road noise for the car is fairly loud, so perhaps something that could reduce this. I know 18" tyres don't come cheap, but budget is no more than £150 if possible.

From another thread it was suggested Goodyear Asymmetric 2 tyres were good, but they aren't directional like the Dunlop's - does this matter?

Thanks

The three I'd consider are

Michelin Pilot Sports (or even the Super Sports)
Goodyear F1 Asymetrics
Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas

All reasonably quiet and generally good reviews.

Make sure you get the same version of tyre (eg XL (Extra Load) etc ) as your OEM tyres

Michelin Pilot Sports are old hat and the Super Sports is not available in your required size.
There are only two makes of tyres I would consider seriously. They are Goodyear Asymmetric 2s and the ContiSportContact 5s.
The Goodyears are more readily available and much cheaper. Get them from Tyre Traders for approx £114 or from Mytyres a few quid more.
The Continentals cost approx £10 more per corner, so £40 more in total.
Personally, I'd go for the Goodyears.
The Doc loves his Goodyears.

I drove a mapped GTD with GY2's on it and the grip was was brilliant , I have also had the Michelins on my old GTD they were a great tyre but felt there was loss of feedback coming through the steering they do last a long time

Same here.
They are very good on the Golf.

I've just (Friday there) put 2 Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas on the front. Initial impressions are good but I'll wait till they scrub in before deciding. They are certainly a lot quieter than the Bridgestones they replaced but then I didn't think they were that bad to be honest.
They also have a decent rim protector.

They get good reviews on most places I have looked at.
