I have a mk3 golf GTI 1997 which I have owned since nearly new and I have spent a lot of time and money on restoring back to show room standard (no mods) and wish to put the original head unit in it to keep it right. I could just purchase a brochure off Ebay for £20 but before I do that I thought someone on here may have the answer. Thank you for your help it is much appreciated.

if it was my daily driver then I would but it will be a garaged dry weekend car when finished. I can be a bit odd at times.

The one I have that was original is a Sony XR-C5100R. This is a changer control unit as well though as mine came with a CD autochanger as a factory extra. Not entirely sure if the cassette only unit is the same though.

I am getting told from a bloke on Ebay the Brochure is saying the standard head unit is a Sony XR6859 RDS. The most anoying thing is that the original unit was in the car when I purchased it then I replaced it with a new unit and it sat in my outhouse until aprox 3 years ago when I threw it away due to the mrs nagging at me to clear it out. Thanks for your kelp though guys.
