Hey all. Service now light is on.Its the first one and I,ve booked it in with the dealers. The YTS on the desk says its £180 .Mentioned something about special oils n stuff for the pd150... So what I wanna know is what special oils? and are they only available thru VW dealers???
cheers all

if you rcar is under warranty i would get vw to service it.
if you've run out of warranty then i would service it myself, the only thing they do for £180+VAT is change the oil + filter, air filter and possibly pollen filter. and for that you get some idiot who doesn't really give two hoots about the car servicing it, I hate the guys at my local vw dealer, they use impact air guns everywhere for time and convenience but nacker the bolt heads in the place.
PD oil is Castrol SLX Longlife (0w30), although now Mobil 1 (0w40) has become Longlife approved too so you can use that, having said that they are all about £30 for a 4liter can. you can buy them through halfords.Vw dealers use something called quantum which is 5w40 apparently comes out of the same refinery as Mobil 1.
hope this helps

Nice one nrgizer, much appreciated.will use the dealers until it runs out.we have 3 local garages all run by ex-vw employees. They got my serviceon the last golf and will on this one too when it runs out..

no worries mate.
I really do resent having to pay the clowns extortionate amounts, i know full well the YTS guys are probably on a pittance but frankly I think anyone could pass the training they go through.
It might sound arogant of me but I will soon become a fully qualified engineer and my labour rate is charged at a much lower rate than the local vw dealer, if you work it out its about £250ish inc. VAT for a service, about £60 in parts, the other £190 is labour and overheads. £65+VAT to change brake fluid - are they taking the pi$$
anyway to put this into perspective, you could go to your local bupa hospital have a versectomy (spelling?!?) for less money than a VW 10,000mile service. a sobering thought
Plus while i've been in the dealer looking through the window i've seen them do some horrific things to cars. and wouldnt want my car to go through the same so i bought myself a decent FACOM toolkit and have used that.
have a nice day
