Basically ive got an 8v digi engine heavily modified which has been dyno'd at 155bhp,
Ive no experience with cooling and was wondering if ill need an external oil cooler or will the standard water cooled one be up to the job?
-
Im running at 240bhp and dont need one, you should be fine.
-
External oil cooler is better than none, especially if you exploit your car on a regular basis, a 10 row cooler, should be more than sufficient for your requirements...

I'd say it depends on the temps your oil gets to..? From what I've read 100-120 ish is ok, but you don't want to go much higher.. Have you got an oil temp sensor on mfa? If so what does it read?

Sorry forgot to mention the engines not in the car yet

Ah ok, well when its in and ran in you shouldnt be seeing oil temps above 110. If you do its very easy to install a cooler post engine install. As thom said you only need a wee one and a sandwich thermo plate with feed and return.

Nice one, cheers matey

What's the engine spec?
-
1.8 bored to 2.0l with longer stroke crank with new bearings rings and gaskets/seals,
Fully balanced,
New std compression pistons (not forged)
High flow oil pump, windage tray and baffled sump,
Head & block skim to achieve 11.1:1 CR,
Re worked TSR pack C head with 40/35mm valves and solid lifters,
Piper Vernier,
Kent 282 cam,
Refurbed dizzy with altered advance curve to match cam,
-
Run it with an oil temperature gauge.
As above, if it's topping out above 110-115 deg C then fit a cooler.
If not, don't bother.
Retain the oil:water cooler - it helps warm the engine oil faster, prolonging the engine's life.
-
what is this advanced altererd curve to match cam? I took my tsr203 cam out because it ran so lumpy. Is there something you need to do to the ignition timing to get it better? Thanks
-
Sounds like some modification to a vacuum advance unit on an early dizzi, or something.
Get mappable ignition instead (like megajolt) and once done it'll run better anyway.
-
erm the 8v gti DIGI dosent work with a vac advance dizzy its just a pickup advance is applyed by the ecu.
would like piccys of the dizzy if it is vac advance type running on a digi ecu as thats a bit diffrent.
with a vernier to get the cam timeing spot on and maapable fuel and ignition you can get an 8 valve with a crazy cam to idel very smoothly takes a while tho and imo uses more map sites than its worth
-
any idea how easy/expensive it is to set up a stand alone management and where i would start?
-
I fitted a vernier to my 8v. It cost me £150 to set up on the rollers. Transformed the car!!

A lot of people run megasquirt as its a DIY standalone but they are all pretty complicated or easy depending on your electrical skills
