Title: Broken down! Weird issue..
Post by: jamie_pyrite on 01 September 2011, 17:49
Hi all, so my car has just broken down :( It's just been to the garage to get the sill welded up, then on the drive back it cut out. Now, when the ignition is put on, there are no lights on the dashboard but it turns over but won't start!

It has a conlog alarm/immobiliser system. It started playing up a while ago where the alarm would randomly go off, so I disconnected the alarm and just used the key to unlock and start the car.

It's a 1996 mk3 tdi (1Z) GL.

Any suggestions? This couldn't have come at a worse time! Thanks

When doing welding on a car, its normal practice to dissconect the battery or put on some surge protection to stop certain electronics getting fryed ie the alternator ,check your wires at the battery terminals to see if they left anything off.

Sounds like an earth lead has come off somewhere (or not been refitted after the welding)

great, thanks for the info! I'll check with the welder tomorrow to find out what he's done and check all my connections. It cut out a few times on the way home then cut out fully and wouldn't start again!

Thanks for the advice everyone - Seems this is sorted but I'm staying cautious! I reconnected the alarm system after removing then re-connecting the battery terminals and it's working again :D
