Title: Is this true?
Post by: scarr89 on 30 August 2011, 21:42
'Please remember a diesel vehicle is NOT required by law to retain a catalytic converter, so there will be no need to swop back to the original cat. when the MOT is due!!' Quote from :

So diesel cars do not need a catalytic converter to pass there MOT? So I am now thinking that I should definitely get a decat and EGR delete for my 150?

Cheers

Pretty sure Dervs only get a smoke test for the MOT.

Regardless a CAT is not required to pass an MOT on any car, the car just has to pass the emissions test.

You have a DIESEL with an S3 engine in it?! Holy cow! Passed the MOT with no cat you say? Is your motor still classed as a diesel and therefore would not need an emissions test?

I am defo hitting up the those mods then

no need for cat for MOT but manufacturers fit them so they have better emissions and in turn gets cheaper TAX and such..

Which part? I don't understand what F17BAD was saying? His car has a S3 engine in it with no cat and past the MOT? I'm getting impression that petrol car require cats and I think Audi don't make a diesel S3 engine which is why I ask... :undecided:

I think there is a slight lack of education on your behalf.

S3 engines are petrol through and through.

Petrol engines have CAT's because they are measured against this when produced as at the moment HC's, NOX, and CO2.

Diesels are smoke tested as they are not measured in other ways at the moment, although visually there should not be any "heavy" smoke and aromatics should be low.

As has been mentioned they are included on cars as they do a really good job at scrubbing emissions and result in a lower tax banding for the vehicle/owner and an incentive for the manufacturer.

Correct. However it is extremely unlikely that any petrol car without a cat would pass an MOT emissions test.

Just incase any confusion, F17BAD's car was originally a petrol 8v.

Not a derv.

Although if it it's pre 1991 then it doesn't need a Cat' anyway (as they were only an option at that time) and would have a different set of emission guidelines then say a 2001 car.

F'Bad's car is petrol and post 1991 and he is saying that his car passed the emissions test without a Cat'?
