Title: aaaggghhh HELP oil
Post by: stainesy on 29 August 2011, 15:44
Ok yesterday morning I topped up my oil as when I changed oil and filter last week I needed to top up abit more. I topped up a little bit to much but though oh well itl be fine. Drove to milton keyens and back but on way back had a play with another low mk3 and pretty much ragged it for bout 10 miles.
Parked it in garage. Just went to get it out garage and there is a puddle of oil under the engine.
My oil level in the car is spot on tho and the oil on the floor looks like old black oil and oil in car is new yellowy oil. Also can't find an oil leak anywhere.
Run the car for ages even went for a long drive then left it to sit and still no oil leak.
Any ideas on this?

if to much oil in car and oil pressure built up where is the most likely place it would seep from over night?
any breather pipe low on agg engine?

Could be from the breather if there was too much oil, but i would have thought you would notice a difference in the running if there was a serious breather issue.

In addition, if it was a breather issue you would probably have stains in the engine bay.

i no its a mystery. the oil on my dipstick is new yellow clear oil and stuff on the floor is black. but my oil level is now back down to ok level and not over filled anymore.
like the car decided to sort it out for me lol

cant figure it out

Best to just keep an eye on the gauges and levels and not worry too much.

Yeah I will do. Am sat in the car now as just left it for a few hours and no sign of any oil leakage. Couldn't be gearbox oil as that smells burnt don't it?
Only oil in car is engine and gearbox aint it. Nowhere els has oil does it?

Gearbox oil could be worth checking although i've never seen 'black' oil come out of a manual box, plenty from knackered auto boxes, better safe than sorry especially if the ragging has blown a seal somewhere.

but dont gearbox oil have a smell about it?
also is it posible for gearbox oil to leak out after ragging a car?
where would it come out?
took car for a drive and gearbox seamed fine no whining or anything diferant.

what colour is gearbox oil?

Could be power steering fluid? My pump took a knock and took a chunk off the union, leaving a little puddle underneath each day.

Also check the oil pressure switch as these tend to leak as well.

Just had look at puddle. Its browny colour and there's about a litre of it. Power steering level fine. And engine oil level at max. Not had chance to check gearbox oil yet.
Starting become obvious now. I recon its gearbox oil.
Fcuk sake my car has 3 hour left on ebay auction aswell.
Sod fcuking law.

well atleast i get to keep her now.
if it is gearbox oil what seals are there that could have gone?
also is it cheaper to get seal fixed or replace gearbox?

Sounds like gear oil, might be a seal gone.

Check the gearbox level and top up then give the area around the box a good clean (pressure wash but not the engine) then drive it around and see what happens, i don't know if there is a seal on the mainshaft but thats usually where most boxes fail then leak in to the bellhousing.

Post by: stainesy on 29 August 2011, 19:38
ok so if that is the case how much am i talking here to get fixed?
would it be cheaper to get another box or to have it fixed?
what everit is i looks like it dropped a litre or more oil over night

fcukit im starting to add up how much i can sell all my mods for already

If its just the mainshaft seal its a cheap part but a box out job, but if the mainshaft seal is leaking badly enough to drop a litre it could also ruin the clutch so better get on top of it sooner rather than later.

Post by: stainesy on 29 August 2011, 19:57
well the car is now not going to be used till i check oil leven and see where its leaking from then will stay in garage till i can aford to fix it.
if its a box out job then makes sence to put new clutch in and release baearing as mine always clicks.
so what we talking here? £400? or more?

It's not a bad job, like anything just make sure you have all the parts you need, a manual and the right tools and give yourself plenty of time to do it, most decent mechanics can drop a g/box out in under an hour.

Gear oil is the same sort of colour as engine oil. Does smell like its burnt yeah, but like said, shouldnt be black. Is it not just old oil from when you changed that you forgot to mop up............ :lipsrsealed:

Gear oil smells stronger than engine oil when its new but after it's done a lifetime in a gearbox maybe not.
Title: Re: aaaggghhh HELP oil
Post by: stainesy on 29 August 2011, 21:35
yeah it does look like old engine oil but it wasnt there when i put the car in the garage and is directly under the engine.
and i changed my oil outside the garage not in it..

its defo not engine oil as its all still in there and totaly diferant colour as its brand new oil in engine.
its gota be gear oil.
i will check after work tomorrow

Dunno about that, when I changed my 14 year old stuff I almost puked. Smelled horrible. Drive smells odd a week later..

Well there is not realy any smell to stuff on the floor.

Well there is not realy any smell to stuff on the floor.

Hmm. Can you wipe everything down, then leave a sheet under your car in a garage or something to try and find out exactly where it's coming from? If it's anything like my car, it's quite tricky to work out which fluid is leaking where at the moment :P

My old 0earbox oil did stink, as did the new stuff. Could say more about my car than about gearbox oil, so don't necessarily take it as certain..

Well I have done all that and there is no leak anywhere. Took car out garage and found big puddle of oil under front of car. Its now engine oil as its still in car and diferant oil. And power sterring level is fine. Only place I can see traces of oil is between bell housing and engine.
Gota be gearbox oil. Will check later. So them prices for clutch kit seal and bearing kit and oil. Is that main dealer price?

Totaly forgot my bros best mate is mechanic and does cheap work for his mates.
Spoke to him and explained all that happened and he recons its my main oil seal. As the oil on floor don't smell it won't be gearbox. He said buy a new oil seal and I'm gona get thrust bearing to wile I'm at it and if I help him he will do it for £60.

He also said to buy a high performance thrust bearing or roller bearing or sumit. No idea what that ment lol.
But where would I get high performance one of them from?

Standard will be fine, I would fit a new clutch whilst it is all apart however.

just been speaking to a mechanic friend of mine and he was saying there is a posibility that as i over filled the oil then ragged the car the oil seal rubber being very hot from hard driving and the presure of the over filled oil could have seeped out but did not cause any damage.
said that one way to find out is to make sure oil level is right this time then give it some hard driving to get it realy hot and see if it leaks again. if it dont it will probly be ok and i should count myself lucky.

so gave it a bloody hard bit of driving and waited and nothing. its in garage now so if theres nothing in the morning i could have dodge a bullet.
oil leaks dont just stop and start do they unless over filled.

thoughts on this please

Have you checked/topped up the gearbox oil? , i had a rover vitesse v8 that used to throw tantrums and drop oil for no obvious reason as it had a totally re-built engine and trans, so fingers crossed you got away with it.

no gearbox oil not checked yet but its not gearbox oil its got no smell at all and the only smell it has is like engine oil.
its blatantly gota be engine oil.

i over filled it and thought ah fcuk it.
now there is oil on the floor and my oil leven in car is where it should be.
so oil on floor and oil missing from engine kinda makes sence. it probly looks dirtyer than the oil on my dipstic as its traveled down and out the bell housing and i have no cover on my flywheel so its probly prety dirty in there.

what do ya recon? if theres no sign of oil in the morning i could have dodged a bullet here.
