Title: Engine coolant for 1.4 TSI GT - Very worried
Post by: brucebanner on 27 August 2011, 23:02
Hi Folks,

So today morning, say ~11:30 am, I got a warning light on the dashboard saying the engine coolant level was low.  I drove around until ~3:30pm when I decided to re-fuel.  At this point I decided to actually look at the coolant level, and it was below the minimum level required.  I was now very worried, so I decided to find the coolant ASAP.  This search led me to Halfords and I bought the red/pinkish liquid to match what was already in reservoir.

A few questions - I'm very concerned about the first one:

1.  What happens when you fix non-VW coolant with coolants made by others?  I'm not even sure what brand of liquid was used because when I bought the car it had even liquid.  Basically, I was so concerned at this point that I just put it the red stuff I bought from Halfords.
2.  Where do I get the manufacturer recommended liquid from?  Can I order it online or do I need to pop into a dealership?
3.  Any idea what oil I should be using?  I think I'm going to change that as well, because when I checked it seemed like the oil was running a bit low as well.  Like above, where can I get this from and which exact one shall I get?

Thanks very much for the help, I really appreciate it.

1. Nothing happens
2. Check handbook for the spec

So you waited 4 hours before stopping and actually looking at what your car was trying to tell you? :lipsrsealed:

i wouldnt mix coolants personally but its doubtfull you will do harm

In the future use coolant from the dealer, G12++ its about £8 a bottle

You can get your oil at the dealer too, they will tell you which to use, go to the parts desk
