Title: New Tyres - Views Sought
Post by: Jimmymature on 27 August 2011, 14:55
Hi gents, I know most haven’t changed their tyres yet but would appreciate advice if you have.  I am replacing my rear tyres as the noise made by the uneven tyre wear is getting on my t1ts.

I'm looking at Conti Sport 5, Michelin PS3, Goodyear Asymmetric 2 and Bridgestone Potenza.  Any experiences would be appreciate (good & bad)

Cheers,

Jim

Asker Am1W has a tyre thread in the maintenace section.

Bridgestone potenza are very noisy imo.

Continentals the older version can start to crack after years of use so not great if you do low miles.

I would go for one of the other two if it was me. I have Goodyear NCT2 on one of my other cars and rate them highly.

It's a known issue with Dunlop's, I've also spoken with the tyre fitter who also mentioned that it's a know issue.  The sound is like wheel bearings.....

I had a blast in Doc's GTD and he's got Goodyear Asymmetric on and believe me I did give it some and it felt very sure footed with loads grip

Snap.
F1 Asymmetrics and they are very good indeed.
Quiet enough, decent wet grip, impressive dry grip, good turn in, no squealing or turtured noises and the wear rate is impressive for such a grippy tyre.
They certainlty seem to suit the Golf chassis.

The only warning, is that as the temperature trops - say under 5 degrees - they are abysmal.
But that's in common with all high preformance summer tyres.

Are these the Asymmetric or Asymmetrics 2's? My local fitter doesnt have the 2's in stock.

Tyre noise was driving me nuts on our Pacific with Cotintis on it.  Had a set of Toyo TEO Plus fitted.

Change was wonderful, turned it in to a quiet car.  They were only a cheap tyre, but felt secure to me.
Our GTD has Bridgestones on it, which are are noisy buggers too.

We have coarse aggregate on our roads here, far removed from German autohbarns so noise can be pretty quite an issue.

Asymmetric's awesome tyres in the summer, really sh1t in freezing weather.

Im using Michelin Super Sports and they wipe the floor with the asymmetric's.

Let's play devil's advocate.

The Continental SportContact 5 MO 225/40 R18 92Y is available now for £113.21 from Tyre Traders.
MO means Mercedes approved. It is the same as the non MO version and is approx £11 cheaper than that one.

Non MO version:

The Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 2 in 225/40 R18 92Y is available from Tyre Traders for £114.50 .

From my various contacts in the tyre industry, the Continental is the better tyre overall and is quieter than the Goodyear.
