I'm in the process of doing bits and bobs to my cabby to get it right and as I've seen so many threads about fuel filler necks I've decided to change mine as it is rusty at the top and I guess prevention is better than cure, so a couple of questions. ÂÂÂ
1) Has anyone changed their fuel filler neck on their cabby ?
2) If so where did you get it from ?
3) I've been in touch with ECP and they only do the mk1 tintop version which is slightly different. I've been told that the tintop ones can be modified to fit so has anyone done this ? If so, what was involved ?
Any help appreciated as the ECP one is £25 + VAT but the OE version is £87 + VAT and that's if I can get hold of one.
Loads of questions I know, but hey, it's a helpful forum.

i got mine off ebay, 21 quid from golfnutts
not fitted it yet but i think its too long, just needs the one end trimmed which i hope staceys better half will do for me

Gibby,
The later cabs (like ours) have got a shorter neck. and yes you've guessed it they are more expensive than the earlier one
I paid about £80 per mine a couple of years ago. I couldn't find a stainless steel one anywhere and now mine is going bloodly rusty at the top again

I managed to get a stainless one although I haven't got around to fitting it just yet. However, I wasn't aware that there was a difference between the tin-top version and the cab. Is it only the later cabrio's or will the same problem apply to mine too?
And no Gibby you can't have it..................took me ages to get hold of one too. I think they used to be supplied by Autocavan so I reckon your best best is ebay or maybe scrapyards where someone may have unsuspectingly scrapped a car with it fitted.

Alright Gibby,
Try German French & Swedish, or if you don't mind paying a little for postage, Norwich VW Centre (01603 480227) are good for parts. I'll even pick the thing up for you and send it on if they won't.
Also there's the main man Marcus (sometimes puts parts on ebay) in London who can source spares for Mk1's. I've got his number if you want it.

^^^^^^^^^^I was on about the stainless ones there.........I know you can get the mild steel ones but as 'Bronze MK1 Cab' says, I was worried that they would corrode again in no time at all.

Rich you know you want to sell me yours ! Thanks all for the replies.
Phil: Is the Norwich VW centre a VAG garage or independent ? If you can give us that guys number too and I'll try him. I think I'll also try that crazyquiff guy who's on the mk1 forum.
I'm not in a mad rush for it as I'm not having probs but as I said earlier I guess prevention is better than cure.

Gibby - NWVC are independent.
They've always come up with the goods and they've been around for at least 20 years as I recently found a photo of me, aged 8, at the Snetterton 24 Hour race back in '83, proudly stood on the NVWC show stand next to a mint Mk1 GTI.
I obviously had impecible taste at a young age!
Marcus's number is one of the following; both are his but I can't remember which one he uses most, so try either.
07951 743679 (I think it's this one) or 07850 861403

Nice one Phil, thanks for that.  At least I've got a few avenues to try, if I get any success I'll be sure to let you all know.
Update:
GSF Want £96 + VAT and it's not a stainless steel one but OE apparently
VW Stealers want either £136 or £115 + VAT depending on if its got some green bit at the top or something for unleaded
-
I had my filler-neck changed last year and decided against the OEM route as I could not afford it. My mechanic had to use the old pipe to help measure up the new one (as it was a little longer than the original). It cost £25-£30 from GSF in Derby. Make sure whoever fits it does a good job - I have a steel petrol filler cap and it does not fit on as flush as it used to.

Gibby, mine is on its way out, two heads are better than one and also increases buying power reducing costs if we get then done at the same place, let me know how you get on.

i had one from sanburns coventry was told this would fit it is stainless steel i think but was a little long but now my my fuel cap sticks out what went wrong
-
you can buy a cheap mk2 filler neck around £27 its a heavier gauge material, you have to cut the mid section and apply two rubber sleeves to the neck instead of the one connecting to the tank, the rest bolts lines up to the fixings.
-
I've been reading a thread on the GSF website and someone was saying that the Golf mk1 filler neck was the same as a Scirocco mk2, only a bit longer. Is this correct? cos I wanna replace mine soon.

Not sure to be honest but I know for definite that the mk1 tintop is different to the mk1 cab but the mk1 tintop can be made to fit the mk1 cab. The mk1 tintop is also a hell of a lot cheaper.
-
Yeah, I think the tin top is the same one as the Scirocco's only longer as a rocco is lowerslung so the fuel pipe runs to the tank above the rear wheel = corrosion. I think new Mk1 filler necks are about £30 from GSF, so I'll ask them.

how would you fit the tin top type to the cab cause i think that is what is on mine and it sticks out at the cap needs adjusting but how
-
Not 100% sure, but I think that when it's first put in it should have been cut slightly in order for it to be fit properly. :undecided:
-
I HAD MINE FROM GSF AND WE HAD TO BEND IT SLIGHTLY AT THE TANK END TO GET IT TO FIT BUT AFTER THAT IT WAS BANG-ON, I HAVE A 91 CLIPPER CAB, IF THE FILLER NECK IS RUSTED MAKE SURE YOU FISH OUT ALL THE BITS FROM THE TANK WITH A MAGNET.
