Since buying the car I've had this problem, it hasn't really bothered me until now that I'm thinking about charging.
turn the key on ignition and it comes up with this

it swaps between these two every 3 seconds with ignition is on.
when i start it, it goes to 7000 rpm, but idles at 1000rpm

anybody know whats wrong? or what I should check?
-
I was led to believe it was A ECU error by a friend.
-
really? I can't see how that would explain the rev counter to read 7000rpm at idle :undecided:
-
Could be faulty clocks.

Could be faulty clocks.
I hope not because these clocks are on 30,000 miles.
Could I buy some 8v clocks, take them apart then swap what I need to, so I can keep the 30,000 mileage?
-
Dunno what would cause it, and I dunno what bits you would change in order to keep your milage, unless you get some new clocks and get the milage changed by a professional. It may only be on 30k, but some components begin to brake down over time, not just usage, so this could account for the problem anyway.
-
So apart from the clocks, what else can I look at that may cause this? Where does it pick up the revs from?
Has anyone got some clocks laying about so you can look at them for me and see if you can take them apart, or if they are a sealed unit?

don't get it

update. it's the clocks  just put the 8v gti clocks in the vr6 and it did the same.
Is the big chip in the middle the memory?

You can get the new / replacement clocks set to the same mileage.
-
Yeah both the square and rectangular ones are EPROMs (electronic programmable memory). The can loose functionality after time and dump memory due to. Corruptions through voltage/signal/current etc. Only thing is you will need to find out which one controls what etc; as you could well dump your milage by removing them. Better to get a new set and get your current milage duplicated by a qualified technician mate
-
Oh cool thanks Wayne and Sean! I didn't know you could do that :embarassed: Are volkswagen the only people that do this?
-
Speak to Brad Kells, he knows someone local to him that does it, but you maybe able to get it done local to you. Not sure what they would call themselves tbh, and not sure if the dealer does it. Apparently it's not illegal if its done properly and I suppose they have to register it.
-
Of all the things to break on a 30000 mile car, very annoying

vr6 is 6 cylinder car gti is 4
clocks will be wrong in rv6 from a gti
cerr means milage error in the ecu and the clocks
get it on vagcom and reset the clocks to the ecu milage
-
Hey mate i had my miles corrected when i got my 16v annie clocks as i wanted them to read what the engine does
i can get them done for £35 ish local to me (leeds) took the guy around 5 mins to do
Carbon chip tuning can also do it, they are a forum sponsor, they charge around £50 to do the job
hope this helps

vr6 clocks didnt show it and the rev needle didnt go all the way round when i plugged them in 8v gti :undecided: it has fall vw history and the millage goes up. How do you know cerr means mileage error?

yeah great help thanks. Leeds is a bit far for me but I will check out cct. Nice one

How do you know cerr means mileage error
vr6 clocks are programed to work on vr6 cars
6 cylinders and that
your rpm will be wrong
think there is a setting on vagcom that can make the clocks reset to the ecu milage

think there is a setting on vagcom that can make the clocks reset to the ecu milage
not on a mk3
