anyone got any good pointers on re-adjusting my handbrake?
its got to the point where when i pull it up i have to use 2 hands to make it 'click'
whereas it used to be an easy task...?
or is this a sign of impending doom?
-
NO idea how to adjust the cable from the top of my head mate but will have a look in my haynes manual for you if you wanted, wont be able to look till i get home tonight tho!
If needed will scan in any pages required and email them over to you!
And your thread title is faf
Paul

thx.. i've got a haynes at home so no need to scan :)
hoping theres just something i can tighten up somewhere... preferably inside the car near the handbrake.. think thats where it was on my old car.. ya popped the cover off and there were some nuts on long threads (if that makes sense.. lol)..
i know the back brakes need sorting soon.. i have pad's n discs.. just gotta get fitted..
am wondering if they're an issue in this..
-
Your handbrake adjustment is the same as your old car. Just remove the handbrake cover, the bit with the ash tray, and you will see the same two long threaded bolts with two nuts (on each thread) that tighten against each other. You just need two 10mm (i think) spanners.
Logic suggests that if the rear pads are worn then the handbrake will travel further. Yours sounds the other way. Probably worth getting the mechanism and cables checked when you fit the discs and pads, but probably just needs a bit of adjustment.
-
how come it sounds the other way? i'm having to pull further to get the "clicks" so it seems worn.. or am i missing something?
i have a good supply of 10mm spanners.. the truck bolts on my skateboard are 10mm i keep tools in the car :)

Sorry, misunderstood, i see what you mean now. Sounded like the lever was stiff and you needed a lot of force to apply it, rather than you had to force it really high.
So, yeah sound like it's probably due to worn rear pads. Get them changed and adjust the handbrake afterwards. Should be fine.
-
ok cheers... might adjust now as a quick fix... then sort rear discs pads out ASAP.. then adjust again after... hmm..
depends upon when the guy donig it is free.. i've had the pads/discs sat in my room for 6 months lol
-
The brakes are self adjusting so shouldn't affect handbrake performance, unless the brakes are down to the back plate.
Could be a seized cable or caliper. Disconnect the cables from the caliper lever, make sure the lever moves free, and check the inner cables moves without friction.

If they haven't been done already have the wheel bearings replaced at the same time.  It's hardly any extra work as you have to retrieve the old outer bearing bit from the old disc and put it in the new disc if you don't get new bearings.  New bearings are less than £20 a side from vw.
I had the rear discs changed recently without new bearings and the old ones were quite worn and disturbing them in the change of discs meant i had to get them changed about two weeks later!  Shockingly the vw dealer agreed to change them for the cost of the parts only as i'd had the discs done there so recently.
Saves time and money in the long run.
-
Thats unbelievable.
You have to knock the bearing shells out of the old discs, so not really worth doing that as you say. Just fit new.
Good old vw dealers
-
There is a very good how to for installing the bearings and changing the rear discs and pads on my site.
Its on a mk2 gti 16v, but mk3 16v/vr6 is exactly the same.
-
ah cool just found ya guide.. printing :)
-
Its not too difficult a job, if you have the right tools.
Its just those allen key bolts that hold on the carrier
-
yeah i got someone lined up to do it already.. had just been stalling it over the winter
because of the weather.. getting my old man to call his mate tonight
-
I watched a mate change another mates rear discs and bearings ( i was on tea duty )
I am right in thinking that the abs ring fits onto the disc? I seem to remember some very careful removal of the abs ring to ensure it stayed in shape.
And a definately remember some carrier bolt wrestling and some very bad languange!
-
not sure.. we've already had one side off and had a look as we wanted to make sure we had the right pads
-
hmm.. its been "good as gold" on the way home from work.. it was just a bit flakey yesterday.. and this morning....
will still get pads/discs sorted ASAP
-
Yes the ABS rotor fits on the back of the disc.
I changed them for new.
-
Don't forget to use a maximum of 3 clicks to lock up as your guide when adjusting the handbrake
-
i'm pretty sure the rear wheel bearings on the offside (drivers side) are gone.. i noticed a clunk when i got out of the car the other night.. and rocknig the car made it happen.. then it stopped... this morning while turning right out of my street it did it again.. sure sign right?
had already arranged for the new discs/pads to be fitted on sunday morning.. i'm gonna go next door in a bit (to VW dealership) and get a pair of rear bearings to go on at the same time
-
Best thing to do overseer is too jack the car up at the back and with the handbrake off place your hands on the tyre at half past twelve / quarter past six positions and try and rock the wheel, if the bearing has play in it you'll feel it through your hands.
When the play is really bad you can hear the wheel knocking.
The VW bearing kits are good as they have everything you need in them except the grease lol
-
yeah it does sound like its coming from the wheel.. i explained it to a few people here at work and they think its more likely to be suspension.. i'll definitely give it a good wiggle when we sort it all out on sunday morning!
i have the bearings now (36 quid all inc for both sides).. n have the pad's n discs at home somewhere..
tonight will be spent putting my new skatebaord together
-
after driving around last night.. have decided the noise i've been blaming on the skateboard vibrating in the boot is actually the wheel bearings... roll on sunday!
-
just got back from doing this..
bearings + pads replaced..
handbrake seems great.. brakes dont squeek anymore.. result :)
labour cost me a tenner.. took from 4.30 -> 8pm.. with big of gassing here and there!
-
Thats 3.5 hours
Its only a half hour job
-
i did say there was some gassing... haha..
plus people turning up to pick up vehicles he'd fixed for them.
one thing was... they had to be wound back manually.. he thinks someone borrowed his winder tool :(
wouldnt be suprised if he's lost it.. his yard is like an aladdins cave... several (dead) furntiure removal
lorries filled with parts and tools.. along with smaller allso dead things filled with more goodies..
it wasnt like he said it took that long.. me and my old man were both there the whole time helping.
the guy's a pro.. works with commercial vehicles all day every day..

I was joking
