Title: Rev counter reading wrong
Post by: Booney907 on 24 August 2011, 23:25
Hi
I've recently replaced my Mk3 Gti 8v clocks with some VR6 ones as my 2nd lcd display wasn't working which annoyed the hell out of me

They work great except the rev counter is out, thought this might happen as there from a VR6, anyone know of a fix for this? or should i just live with it?

Not sure how much out they are, it's idling at 500 instead of the 1000 it used to

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Cheers

Chris

I think you need to switch back to 8v clocks, don't think the speedo will be correct as well.

8v is 140mph, 16v and VR is 160mph from memory

the rev counter wont read correctly due to them being set for 6 cylinders, you can use 16v clocks and they will be accurate (and I recon the speedo will be fine on both as that uses a pulse from the drivetrain rather than from the engine)

I've got an old set of non-working clocks that I was about to bin, I can take the lcd screens out and stick them in the post if you like? You can maybe repair your old 8v clocks?

Yeah they are 160mph and the 8v 140 or 130

As long as the speedo is ok i'll keep them, i'd rather have a rev counter reading a little wrong than my old clocks with an illuminated lcd that doesn't display anything
Plus the LED bulbs display so much better with these as i could remove the filter, old ones were quite dim

I suppose if the rev counter annoys me enough i'll be on the lookout for a VR6 lump sooner than expected! lol

Cheers anyway Dom but i think it's a bit more than just the LCD, if you disconnect the clock and reconnect it displays fine, then after 5 mins it shows a small bit of some writing, i can still see the arrow showing whether it's on mpg, temp etc but the mfa button doesn't move it at all, think the actual board is glitched/fried somewhere

Fair enough, I had a screen go in my first Mk3 and it was just a case of replacing it. Yours sounds as if it's something more sinister though

The clocks or the screens? They're in the bin but I can fish them out?

Just checked the speedo using the sat nav and it's fine, it's about 2mph out but if i recall correctly so is my van, at 50mph the nav said i was doing 48mph and at 100mph (i mean 70!  ) i was doing 97 so it looks all good

Speedo's are always out. They always show more than the real speed. They are made like that.
