Title: SLR Servicing
Post by: Diamond Hell on 24 August 2011, 13:57
Sooooo, the shutter/Aperture wheel on my 500D stopped working.

And it has thrown the odd Err50 when on timelapse - incredibly annoying because it stops the session in its tracks.

I called Canon, who referred me to Colchester Camera (CC), as they had the shortest wait time.  I then spoke to CC and shipped the camera to them (£38 including insurance to £500, but I'd be p*ssed if it went missing).

They acknowledged receipt of the camera, then called me last week, because there were no fault codes (I guess there's a CANONCOM app) on the unit, so suggested it was the intervalometer (£20, so quite possible, but annoying).  They asked if I wanted the camera serviced, I pointed out the wheel had stopped working, so they went ahead.

I see from the invoice that they've replaced a slightly damaged cover on the camera, as part of the service.  The camera has also been re-calibrated, so should work as-new.

When I rang up to pay, I asked about the shutter mechanism.  If it failed (life expectancy of 100-150,000 actuations) then it would be replaced as part of the service.  On this occasion it hadn't so it wasn't, but then I've only had the body for about 18 months.

This I find particularly excellent, as it means if you do shoot a lot of timelapse, if your Canon SLR does fail on the shutter, the repair cost will be £90+VAT and carriage there.

Better than that, when it comes back it's warranteed for six months.  If it goes tits in that time they will re-repair it and refund the shipping costs.

I have to say that I'm less impressed at the £60 + VAT to repair my 50mm F1.8, on which the front was falling off.  Shoulda bought a new one of those.

Camera delivered back the day after the invoice was paid.

All appears to work, so all good so far.

Anyone want to buy a 500D with battery grip and a bunch of accessories?
