Title: What do i put on the end of it?
Post by: Dave_IOW on 22 August 2011, 12:34
Alright mk3 lot, ive actually got a mk4 1.8t but going for bigger turbo ive added a vr6 maf.

What filters do you guys recommend for the end of it, obviously must be non-oiled.

Also would be good if it had a pipe on it to take it away from the MAF a little bit to reduce heat soak..

Also, want to spend as little as needed, you know how it is

Stick with a standard airbox and smooth the inside, and put a cold air feed to it. Non oiled u may as well just keep a standard paper panel filter and replace it every 6 months. Otherwise a performance panel filter works best.

As long as it non oiled, it will be fine, oil messes MAF's.

I very much doubt a vr6 airbox will fit into a mk4 bay where it needs to be, also this setup will be flowing 270hp and been advised by tuner it needs a cone > airbox, probably due to what volume of air its actually going to pull.

I read through that thread by toyotec you have on here, but thats on a ABF engine, not a 270hp turbocharged lump.

Heaksoak affects me in a different way, not as much, but still undesirable.

On a turbo engine, the amount of air flow is more important than heatsoak.

Turbo heats up the air anyway, thats what they have intercoolers for.

Cotton cones are supposed to be the best at filtering.

I know at home somewhere I have a magazine feature that had the flow rates and restrictions of a load of different brand air filters. I'll dig it out when I home tonight

Right, out of K&N, Green Cotton, Jetex, Pipercross, Powertec, ITG, the powertec filter was found to be the least restrictive, but its a metal gauze design that is known not to catch small particles. The next best was the Jetex, which was a cotton filter.

That would get my vote, as cotton is renowned to be the best at filtering out of foam, cotton and metal gauze. Faiing that, green cotton was next best.

K&N was found to be the most restrictive out of all of them.

Hope this helps

Cheers for informative reply

How much you want for green cotton filter? Is it a cone on cylinder shaped one?
