Hi,
I'm new to this site and VW altogether.
I have a problem as the car won't start after my wife went out in the car this morning, alarm keeps going off and only stops if I disconnect the alarm siren. Indicators blink on and off intermitantly when the car is left and locked. I have disconnected the battery for about half an hour to see if that would sort it out but it didn't make any difference. The car will bump and I can hear the fuel pump priming but I don't know what it can be.
Any help greatly appreciated as I need the car for work in the morning !!!!

Kev

unfortunately sounds like either an immobiliser problem or a ecu problem chances of sorting for the morning is unlikely have you got a standard alarm system or aftermarket?
-
Hi Dragongreengolfgti,
Thanks for the reply.
I'm not sure if it's a standard or aftermarket.
I've only had it just over a week and it's only happened today for the first time.
As you say I won't get it fixed tonight but any help to what and how to check is much appreciated.

Kev

I had better say before someone else does have you introduced yourself to the new members board first as they do get funny on here and thats probably why you havn't had so many replys. secondly all i can say is you need to plug it into vag-com and check for codes first as that will give you a good indication as to your problem hopefully.
1.does the car fire over ?
2.is the battery going dead?
-
Thanks for the heads up.
The engine doesn't even attempt to turn over and as far as I know the battery is fully charged as it was ok yesterday.

well im pretty sure your looking at an immobiliser problem then what engine is yours and year i may have a complete set and ecu you can have
-
It's a 1996 and AGG
-
thats what i have im breaking its a 1996 agg p reg you will have to get the code off your ecu which is under the scuttle panel i can give you the ecu, immobiliser box, key, car door locks and the ring around the ignition switch for £25 delivered that should sort you out firstly though i'd recommend a vag-com check which you can either buy off ebay as a disk and usb cable to obd2 port for about £7+ or a hand held machine which i have for £20 plus
-
Cheers for that.
I will check fleabay for the disc and cable and will let you know if I need anything.
So I take it you have two gti's by the photo's.
-
i have 3 at the mo i have a black 5 door 8v gti which is where the kit would come off i have the green one in the first picture which i crashed last christmas on black ice also a 8v and now my pride and joy in the second pic 16v gti which is my little project. I'm looking to sell after xmas though as im after something abit faster and track worthy
-
Very nice.
I have just ordered disc and usb lead and should have it by Tuesday
I will let you know if I need anything.
Where abouts are you from ?
-
alright mate sounds good hopefully it will answer your problems  i live near gloucester not far from bristol u?
-
Yeah hopefully I can get it sorted quickly.
I live between Durham and Newcastle.
I take it you take your cars on the track then.
-
I would check the battery - if you have one in an other car - try changing it over.
When I got my golf, alarm was doing the same thing - battery would only keep a very small charge - enough for one start - and then the alarm went mental.
Worth checking before you start messing with the alarm system. Try and find out what make it is. If you remove the trim around the steering wheel colum, they may be a reciever box with a make and/or model no and you may be able to find out how to reset, etc.
-
thats a fair way i used to work all over the country and was often up that way when i done electrician work got made redundant though  and left that side of it now doing enginering as i done in college  i dont track my golf no only car ive ever tracked was my renault 19 16v which was built for fun  however i have a track day booked for the 5th of oct at castle combe which should be fun
-
Cheers WadGTI
I will check that out tomorrow after work.
Tried jump leads but wouldn't start, had to bump it after disconnecting alarm.
-
Yeah I bet it will be fun, I would love to be able to do a track day.
Suppose you have to have total confidence in your car to go flat out around a track tho.
-

If it didnt start with a jump then could be your alarm. An auto lecy may disconnect for a hour of labour.

most track days are full of novices mate you dont have to take your car to the limits to have fun theres some people on here who are really clued up about it and take it serious! I drive how i do on the roads with a bit more attitude  you can buy insurance for track days aswell for £100+ so its not to bad and you have a luagh if anything else its not about winning
-
All sounds good, I will be in touch if I need anything.
What else do you have for sale ?
-
what do you need i'l let you know if i still have it mostly interior bits off a 5 door i have a spare engine just needs rebuilding
-
I am looking for the following bits.
The two bits of black dash trim at each side of radio
Glove box handle ( snapped off )
Door pins
Cheap radio and cage ( just temporary )
That's it for now I think unless I need the other bits you mentioned yesterday.
-
ok i have the plastic bits either side of the radio  dont have a glovebox handle as mine snapped on my current daily so i had it out of the spare car and i sold the other as a complete dashboard. I have door pins 3 or 5 door? and i have a kenwood cd/mp3 player which is actually quite good with cage etc no box though i can get pics of all these bits if you want and i will do it all for £40 delivered if interested the stereo isn't that old i just upgraded a few months ago as all my system is now sony equipment
-
Ok cheers....I will see what the diagnostics come up with when disc arrives before I decide what I want.
Engine runs a bit lumpy between 1500 - 2000rpm, I have read that some people suggest cleaning throttle body and also some people mention relays, what's your thoughts on this ?
Cheers
-
So what are your plans for your 16v pride and joy ? It looks very smart from the outside, have you done all of that or is it part of your ongoing project?
-
My thoughts are the same clean the throttle body really well using carb cleaner also check for air leaks on the vacum houses the ones to the charcoal canister etc. Give it a good service and you should feel a new car again it sounds unlikely to be a relay for that symptom inless it cuts out on you when stopping etc. not sure on plans yet debating selling it after xmas but so far i have done alot of work on it heres my thread of work done so far

Very nice work.
So if you sell it what would you go for next ?
I had an old Audi S4 Avant a few years back, what a car that was !!!! love it until head went , got it sorted but lost confidence in her so got rid. Since then I've had a Pug 206 Gti and a Jag X type diesel but fancied something different this time so plumped for the Mk 3, not sure it was the best choice yet !!!
-
hopefully i wont have to sell it  i'm hopeing to buy a evo 8 fq300 in february and keep this as my daily but if i have to sell it to aquire the extra funds i will sadly have to. I will then buy another one in the summer or a mk2 for a project
I like the s4's and jags tbh nice cars not sure im grown up enough to have one though lol
-
Yeah still got the Jag but will be going in the very near future, I was born in the 60's :embarassed: so maybe a little older than you and had the same thoughts as you but very nice cars all the same.
I used the wifes Puma today, feels a bit like a go-kart and goes quite well
I'm new to all of this doing cars up malarky but can turn my hand to most things, is the Haynes manual any good ? What would you recommend to get sorted first...after the current problem  engine ? bodywork? interior? Bit tight on funds at the mo so the cheapest options will be first.
-
Update
Got the car started tonight
I'm not sure what it was, I just twiddled about with some wires, disconnected battery, checked fuses etc.
Hopefully that's it sorted and was just one of those unexplainable occurences.
Thanks for all of the advice.
-
ah good result still check on vag com and see if theres any codes stored which could be underlying problems sometimes all it takes is disconnecting the battery for 12hrs or something that resets the ecu  as to your question about sorting bodywork interior etc depends on what you want out of the car if its a keeper then spend some time renewing and keeping it look smart i always tend to go for outside apperence first then work on the interior and engine bay after although this car has worked out different
-
Yeah I thought I would start on the outside, I don't like the white lenses on the indicators on the front for starters. It has a couple of small patches of rust but overall the paintwork is very good for 15 yrs old, sunroof rubbers could do with sorting as they are cocvered in what looks like moss :undecided:
Do you know of a good way to get the black back to black if you know what I mean. Is it worth getting alloys refurbed or is it cheaper to get a new set as mine have been badly kerbed ?
When I took it out for a run the clutch seemed to be sticking just when it bites, does this seem like it could be serious or maybe just needs a bit of lube?
Do you have a paypal account if I decide I want the kenwood ?
-
rust on wings etc can be changed for others from someone else i had to do the ones on my current daily not a big issue
There are various ways of getting the black gti trim back to black either use back to black from somewhere like halfords or motorworld or even tesco but this generally only lasts about 3-4 weeks and is sticky however for a quick job its fine  other products are autoglym bumper care which is pretty good also by a bottle of boiled linseed oil and rub it on then rub it down with a clean cloth after a while this is used by lots of people and lasts anywhere from 3-6 months but it does smell in the heat
Clutch is hard to say, It could be the clutch itself or the cable as there self adjusting on most best thing to do is to replace the cable about 15-20 quid and like you say wd40 everything on the box side of things.
To get alloys refurbed is around £35-£50 a wheel for sandblasting and painting so inless you like them enough to justify spending circa 170 on them i'd try find a better set online with decent tyres or without and swap your tyres over. Are yours the 15" longbeaches ? i refurbed mine myself and put them back on this weekend so im now running them black standard for the winter as i had a blow out on the white wheels on sat night
Yes i have a paypal account mate no worries i will chuck in the plastics either side if you choose to have it i'l pm you some pics tomo/thurs
-
Yeah they are but I fancy something bigger, did it take much doing the refurbing yourself ?
Glad to hear the blowout wasn't too serious, was it front or back ?
I have tried some vinyl stuff on the black but it is very patchy.
I did get one code up...front left abs but no light on dash, maybe bulb is shot or not even there !!!
-
Dosn't take to long really give yourself a day to prep and paint starting with to wheels get some scotch brite pad and rub the alloys down till it loses its colour and smooth you can also use some wet and dry sandpaper for a super fine finish  Then using primer white if your going white or grey for darker colours i did 2 coats and then 3 coats of paint followed by 2 coats of laquer job done  If the edges of the wheels are kerbed gently file them down flat which once painted is hardly noticeable.
Blow out was on the front but luckily near my girlfriends house so i just coasted it back to hers and changed the spare over
Most likely the bulb isn't there there often taken out of these cars
-
To add to the above, if you take the alloy back to bare metal, use etch primer before normal primer or it wont stick properly. It will still cost you probably £60 or more to do all 4 wheels properly. Various wet n dry, 400, 800, 1200 grade, 2 tins of etch primer, 3 (large) tins normal primer, 5/6tins base coat, 2/3 tins of lacquer. Also if your gonna do it properly if you have bad curbing, liquid metal.
