As per title, just picked up my first DSLR:
- An excellent condition Canon EOS D60 digital SLR and
- A Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM zoom lens, still in its original box (it looks like new)
I know the D60 is an old camera but the body and lens cost me £100 all together :lipsrsealed: and it takes some nice shots (although size doesnt do them justice):

Anyway I'm new to this and have a small question: What general purpose lens would you guys recommend? Preferably with autofocus? I understand it needs to be an 'EF' lens fitment?

Get a 50mm fixed focus, or 'prime'. You will love it if you enjoy photography. Then something in the 15-100 range as a 'walkabout' lens.

The fact you need EF mount lenses will make it more expensive for nicer ones, but you can still have a bargain if you pick up the older EF fit lenses that were made for Canon's EOS film SLRs.

So, since you already have the long zoom lens, just get a 50mm lens and a "walkabout" lens with a good range, like 17-55mm (Canon's range) or 18-50mm (Sigma).

+1 on the 50mm
It's generally regarded as a must for all togs.
One of the reasons is that 50mm gives roughly the same perspective as the human eye (on a full frame) for this reason 35mm is also worth considering (~50mm with the crop factor).
but like the others say, get a walk about lens or a zoom lens to deal with the lower end.

Right then, I only need a 50mm fixed focus lens now as I acquired a 35-80mm Canon lens (with UV filter) today.
Spent a while reading the manual on the D60 last night, there's so much to it :nerd:
