Title: Anybody else find reading difficult?
Post by: Godzilla on 20 August 2011, 11:35
I am wondering here as I cant seem to read books......Everybody I know reads books with ease, I read the first page and think 'I am bored'

What is strange is I can read up on say Golf GTI's for hours on our forum.  Only other thing I read about on the net is dogs (I am a huge dog lover, especially German Shepherds!)  and Anabolic Steroids  (Been into bodybuilding for years so this is of great interest)

Give me any book fact or fiction and I will be bored within 2 minuets and put it down with the intention of coming back and reading it but it just sits there and gathers dust!!

Please say there are others like me!!

Paul

Steroids, so you want to be bold, become infertile and have an odd shaped body  :undecided:

Otherwise no i dont like reading too much, just wait for the film.

I cant get to sleep without reading for a bit whilst lying in bed. Sad but true! Try an autobiography by someone you like to start off with. Those are usually the ones I read late into the night as I cant put them down! Not everyone enjoys reading, its just what interests you I suppose. I have been like that with many books, and now I only have a select few authors who I can read. Apart from autobiographys, I can only read crime/thriller fiction books.

I would recommend Lenny McClean - Govner. If your into bodybuilding, power, fighting, and general brutality! - Awsome!

In pretty much the same, I enjoy reading reference books more than stories.

Much rather pick up a photography reference book than a novel. I do read a lot of magazines as well. I also find it very difficult to watch films, staying in one place for over an hour causes me problems!

I'm the same, I'll read factual books and manuals but any other books I won't get more than first page in partly boredom which goes in hand with lack of concentration.

Lots of hype bud!!  The media puts a terrible name on them. I have used them on and off for 11 years with no sides, well a bit of acne and a very high sex drive.  I started reading about them over 20 years ago and now I am a moderator on a Bodybuilding website.  The interesting thing is the in the States they are finding small amounts of Testosterone given every 2 weeks via IM are proving to be far more effective then anti-d's.  It is called 'TRT' which stands for 'Testosterone Replacement Therapy'  It really is shocking if many of us guys were to get bloods done for Test levels and see where they range on the scale, normally very low thus the low motivation, erectile dysfunction, poor sex, low strenth, low moods.....It is shocking to find out how we are effected.

On the other hand!!  I am like you bud.....I wait for the film!!

Seanl......  The legend L.Mclean!  I met him nearly 10 years ago, true gent, very sad when he passed away.  I like my Bodybuilding and I teach Kickboxing so may have to look into some autobiography's....I dont think Tyson has one out, could be wrong, as he is someone I have admirred for years.....Read heaps about him on the net and watched every fight he has had, well almost every fight!

Will pretty much read anything to pass the time on the cr4pper TBH

Best stuff is fiction and can happily spend hours reading if the book is good enough. As a result if I like a book I've gotta read a good bit before I want to sleep.  There again I also HAVE to finish watching a film no matter how poor it is...think the only one I turned off was the queen latifah remake of Taxi...lost all the humour of the french one

I think you have pointed out in your origional post what the problem is. If you read it to yourslef again you will see that the things you like to read are things that you are interested in, which is the same for almost everyone and the reason why "studying" can be difficult, people are often not very interested in what they are reading and their brain switches off. So in my opinion you must be trying to read the wrong kind of books. As someone else mentioned read a book about body building or an auto biography of a famous dog trainer or something.. haha

I find it very hard to read books but once i get past the first chapter or two i usually can't put the f*cker down! I know i will get to that point so keep reading until i get into it.

Books have the purpose of either passing on information or for entertainment. it would seem that you like to read to gain information, for example cars, body building, dogs... etc.

Perhaps reading for entertainment just isn't the way your brain likes to spend its time.

You may need reading glasses! your eyes maybe getting tired, and your losing the inclination to read any further, eyesight can start to deteriorate late 30s to mid 40s and obviously beyond, other symptoms maybe its difficult to drive long distances, without having to stop for a short sleep! worth getting your eyes tested

I totally agree with mumbles. Try reading books that you have an interest in. I personally like to read non-fiction books, though I just read Thomas Hauser's biography of Muhammed Ali. Amazing book, thoroughly recommend it.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Muhammad-Ali-His-Life-Times/dp/1861057385/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1313922964&sr=8-1

Also I just renewed my membership to my local library. Haven't stepped foot in it for over 20 years. I was looking for a book which wasn't in their system so the librarian said they can buy it off Amazon and loan me that copy. Amazing.

You wouldn't like my kindle then

I agree with Jay, paper is easier to read. I have tried the Kindle and though it is quite good I'm not sure I like their philosophy. I read that they can remotely delete books that you have already bought.

I just couldn't live that.

Tbh, a Kindle is pretty good for reading. Not really bright, and the text is bold black against a grey backdrop and is surprisingly easy to read. Missus was gonna get me one, but persuaded her to get me a Rotary instead!
