Title: handbrake light & ABS light
Post by: Richie_C on 19 August 2011, 22:48
Finally got all my discs and pads changed and fitted with new ones and new o/s/r caliper.

Got 3 problems though.

1: Bleed nipples welded shut and sh!t scared of snapping them or rounding them off
2: ABS light is now staying on when car is fired up
3: Handbrake light goes off after firing up but then after about 30 seconds comes back on

The handbrake is working fine (well it will be once i can get the brakes bled)

Any help and ideas on all 3 problems?

Cheers

Handbrake light is also fluid level so might be worth checking the fluid.

Soak your nipple in penertrating fluid, hmmm that sounds bad  get the best fitting socket on it and be brave its got to undo,as for your other issues .....

At work all weekend got the car at work so when i can iam popping down and giving each bleed nipple a soak in wd40.

Fluid level is fine i havent checked the handbrake switch yet

Have read on a few post on here that if more than 1 abs sensor is out this can cause the handbrake light to come on!!

i have this, i fliud level is fine, i bought a new handbrake switch and changed the osf spped sensor and still on . im gonna take a look at the abs ecu controller when i get the chance. when read it shows the abs pumps is faulty. at the moment i have unplugged the the connector in the dash for the airbag and abs as the handbrake light goes off when this is done (the handbrake light on constantly was really bugging me lol). if i take the abs controller off the abs pump can i drive the car without it??? i mean will i have any brakes??

I had a similar problem on my Mk3, the ABS light was stuck on, and it was throwing up a 'ABS hydraulic pump fault' on the OBD scan , however after some digging with the diagram and meter, it turned out to be the light module that was causing the fault. There was a comparator chip which had failed in mine. As soon as I disconnected it and re-scanned - no fault present. Replaced the module, all is ok.

Yes you can drive without it and still have brakes,i did this last week for several days no issues.

I just sorted exact same faults on mine.Bought a cheap code reader off ebay (£20 odd) and it showed 2 faults :- both front abs sensors.

Would not clear codes until sensors had been replaced.Replaced one at a time and first fault reset turned off handbrake light and second turned off abs light.Sorted !.

i had the bleed nipple issue, i snapped the complete bolt on the nipple, tried a torx bit into the nipple and snapped that in there, last choice was to get a new set of calipers and then drill out the damaged nipple

My GTI handbrake light would come on and stay on if you absolutely anchored it and the wheels locked up (was an ABS fault but bulb had blown) and would go out if you turned the igntion off and on again.

So I'm fairly positive the handbrake light has something to do with the ABS.

When the hand brake light is on ,for those without the bias unit on the rear axle it can  mean that your brake bias is not working so you have equal pressure to all wheels. not good if your going round a bend and then have to stamp on them, could lock up the rears and spin you out.

If the handbrake light is showing constanly then it means the ABS controlled brake bias is not working.

Non ABS mk3s have a brake bias valve on the rear axle (controls front and rear brake balance). On late mk3s with ABS, the system controls brake balance.

Basicly your ABS ECU has packed up so you have no brake balance system which is bad.

Everything was working fine till i changed discs pads and r/o/s caliper. Ive ordered new front abs sensors. Might as well do them all while iam at it.
For the rear sensors do i just need the sensor like the fronts or do i need the long lead aswell? I have a 3 door and read that its only 5 door that has connector under the seat is this right?

If abs ecu has packed in is this a hard job to fix?

Five mins to change the ECU as long as the bolts dont round off, its finding an cheap exact replacment thats hard,
