Title: Front suspension wobbly feedback....
Post by: javalin on 19 August 2011, 09:52
Chaps,

Fitted poly-bushes on the front suspension a while ago - mk3 golf GTI.  Since then the car is fine on new smooth (i.e. tarmac'd) roads, but feels wobbly as f**k on roads with lumps or tramlines on.  Also worse in the wet bizzarly.

Feels like sometime is shifting when you turn into a corner, you get a weight shift feeling, you correct for it, then its fine.  Just that initial transfer when you change direction.  Feels like the bottom of the wheel (wishbones) is moving maybe, but the ball joints are also new....

Tracking has been done by VW since then and is now correct.

All bolts tight as far as I can tell.

Any ideas?

James

Is there any play when you jack it up and rock the wheel?

not in the wheel.  Slight left-right movement on the steering, but hopefully thats normal.

I don't think so - is there a test for this?

Check the steering universal joint for play. Its by the pedals.

Next try checking for play in rack and steering balljoints.
