This one

I was gonna ask the missus to get it for me at xmas. I'm a noob to detailing, but understand that a DA will be better for beginners. Rotarys are cheaper and give better/quicker results though (if the user is competant obviously) so I would rather get one of these, and just practice on some old panels. So are these any good, or am I better off spending a bit more to get the DJ one, or should I really really get a DA?
Cheers!

a rotary is fine.. how much are you expecting to be using it?
-
Half a dozen times a year at most probably with mine and the missus's car. Then again, probs a few family members and friends cars if I'm any good with it, so the first year maybe a few more than that, but its just personal use so not too much.
-
That will be fine for what you want it for, go for it.
-
Happy days, cheers fellas!
I take it though that its not the most reliable with alot of usage then?
-
With rotarys.. The same as anything, you get what you pay for.. I've got a festool but it comes with a longer guarantee and 48hr turnaround.
If you can up your budget then do so.. Or go cheap this time and if you find it indispensable then trade up when this one conks out! :)
-
Cheers Guy. Dont think my budget will stretch as far as a festool but will ask the missus nicely for a decent one. She was gonna get me a Kindle so I may be able to stretch to something a little better, but will obviously need products to use it with so will look into the kits. Thanks again!

I have the exact same model, I've been using it for just over a year now and find it works really well Sean.
With most things, it depends on the polish(s) that your using aswell, but I find that buying the sponges and polish off Ebay is so much cheaper than buying in the shops.

The Silverline is a great budget machine.
When you are ready to order, give me a shout and i'm sure I can put a little kit together and sort you a deal out on one

Cheers FG, nowhere down here does any detailing equipment that I know of, except halfrauds so I will have to get it online anyway. Will have a look about for the consumables after I get it.

I live in Plymouth mate, I got mine from the Tool Shed at the bottom of town, they also do all the pads/sponges etc for them.

I think its shut down now though hasn't it? I used to go there occasionally for cheap tools I only realy needed very very occasionally, but last time I went there, it looked like it had shut down.
Edit: went in there today (not closed down then!) but they didn't have any. Had a look in their catalogue and only have makita ones etc circa 350 notes.

Ive got a silverline polisher, does the job just fine!

Mine wanted to fly off in all directions and was hard to control....maybe I'm just rubbish with tools. Yep, that'll be it!
-
I think being budget ones, they are quite heavy so a little trickier to control. That and the size of the pad and possibly products used may contribute to overall controlability. Had a look on detailing world and trawled through the guide, and I think thats what they said if it bounces. (there is a name for it, but it took me about an hour to read the whole thing and I was having a bit of a brain fart by the end)

I bought myself a Silverline rotary about 7 years ago. Still going strong, great bit of kit. Has done a lot of hard work over the years!
-
Awesome bit of kit,can even one hand polish on roofs and bonnets etc...

Cheers looks good. I think I'll get it from waxamomo though as I'm not sure on those generic kits. At least with waxamomo I can give him my budget, and a little info on car colour and the state of the paintwork, and he can advise me on best product to use within budget and thats likely to get it to a reasonable standard.

Makita(same size as silverline) on the left and the one i posted on the right

Something to think about
-
Yeah I understand that mate. Just dont think I could afford a nice light one with a good length cable and then products as well on my budget. :undecided: Will have a look again though and see what I can come up with. Cheers!

Just bought a silverline rotary tool, its well made and a great buy for the money.
As for cable length, use an extension lead.

Doesn't stop it being a hitting the side of the car when doing the roof, the extra cable length allows you to run the lead over your shoulder and still have free movement to polish.
I'm not saying don't get a silverline, but if you can stretch your budget a little further get something better.
-
I took the plug off my Silverline, and added an extra 30' of cable, no need for an extention, and like you said, it sits nicely on my shoulder!!
