Hi all
I picked up myself a pretty mint 8v from a chap in Glasgow who spent alot of time and money on it.
I have done 500 trouble free miles in 2 weeks, and it's been a joy to drive. I have very little mechanical knowledge, but I bought the car to use at weekends, and learn to fix if and when required.
There is a local garage which I thought I might try out incase I needed them, so I got them to fix a blow in the exhaust, and also tighten the newish alternator belt now it has done a few hundred miles. Well they failed to fix the exhaust, and today the alternator belt flew off! I had looked at their handywork after they had tightened it and wondered if they had put the belt on the wrong way up (the teeth of the belt were pointing out the way).
Luckily my friend was on hand to tow me home.
I am now looking for a new alternator belt. Where is a good place to buy parts?
I found this: http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=714
Is this the correct part for a 1990 8v GTI without power steering?
It's very cheap but postgae is more than the belt itslef.
Thanks in advance

Yeah thanks got a new belt, just having a go at putting the new one on. I am struggling to locate/loosen the bolt to allow movement of the alternator?

Wow, would not be rushing back to a garage if they put an alternator belt on the wrong way!
I think there is just the one bolt at the bottom of the alternator that needs loosened a bit to allow easy tensioning via the adjuster arrangement at the top.
The lower bolt head is accessed through the cam belt cover iirc.

On my first MK2 the alternator belt kept flipping by itself.
See here for a few possible problems:

6mm hex bolt to loosen the pivot bolt, then a 13mm socket to loosen the adjuster gear.
