Title: The most idiotic thing you've done (car related)
Post by: jmsheahan on 16 August 2011, 18:21
What's the most stupid thing you've done whilst working on your car? Hear all sorts of stories of people leaving the car in gear and running themselves over etc!

Have done a few but here's one of mine today - was fitting a vdo sender to the oil cooler. Removed the original sender, got distracted with something else, left the cooler hole open and started the car... lovely clean engine bay now covered in oil. Fecking projected everywhere!   Just spent the last hour cleaning up the mess!

What have you done? Lets have a laugh  :lipsrsealed:

Started changing the alternator on a rover vitesse a few years ago but forget to disconnect the battery, the jolt threw me about 6ft away from the car, didn't do it again

When I first got it I topped up my Mini's engine oil using a funnel via the dipstick hole whilst choosing to ignore the large oil filler cap in front of me. At least it went to the right place...

Luckily enough I've not done anything stupid to my own car YET. Bu today as it happens, went to scrappy to get some retaining clips for my bonnet litters to attach em to the ball joints, and decided to use some French thing to take em off of. (206 wagon I think it was). Anyway, the glass was on dampers as well as the boot, so decided to use the glass ones as it was easier to get to. Boot was already in the air, so opened to glass out, and when I removed the damper, the glass flew forward and shattered. £20 cost of the glass and a really pissy bloke to boot. The most expensive damper clips in history!

Cant think of anything really daft that I've done, but many years back, my neighbor was a keen DIY'er, this included servicing, and minor repairs to his beloved Rover V8 SD1
He would nose the car up to the entrance to his garage, climb down into his pit, and proceed to pull the car over the pit, so he could do what was required.
This particular day, its believed that the exhaust was blowing on the Rover, so he went through his routine, and pulled the car over his head while he was in the pit, only this time he had the engine running... so he could find what was wrong with the exhaust? Unfortunately, one of the two garage doors blew shut behind the car, and locked in place, like it was supposed to do. trapping him under the car with the engine running... He died of Carbon monoxide poisoning, the car ran out of fuel, and was probably a full day before anyone found him!
Silly sod!

had a saxo vtr and the starter had gone so had to bump start it everywhere on my own.
Changed the rad but they are notorious for air locks, ignored mine for a long time until i had to drive 50+ miles things got a little noisy, had to stop the car outside a footballers house with a gravel drive and let the car cool. Then i proceeded to bump the car on my own on his 10ft gravelly drive! pretty much the hardest thing i have ever done on my own!
the car then died with a loud bang and lots of oil 3 miles away from my house on the exit of the m60, cost my £85 to get it towed home!

Pulled up at the pumps today, pressed the button...nothing. Pressed it again, nothing. I was really really really in the red here. I put an arm rest in last week, so I was hoping that I'd just forgotten to connect it back up to the button. As I was so low, and about a 20mile drive home I called trusty dad to bring my tool box to the petrol station, took out the arm rest etc etc and thankfully found it disconnected...tit.

On my old Astra mk4 sleeper (2.5 v6 in it) i had a squealing pulley for the steering and alternator. so i bough some silicone spray, and sprayed it up. was all quiet untill my battery light came on, the silicone made the belt slip off, taking out all the other belts and destroying the nylon pully. so i got towed home in a car with a totally flat battery that needed its ignition on for the brakes and steering to work properly because they where both electronically assisted....and it was dark!

DOH!

wondering why I was down on power for a few weeks then looking at the throttle cable, pulling it and realised the throttle butterfly would only open half way when the pedal was to the floor. I was the last person to touch it all as I cleaned the throttle body out :embarassed:

Also I forgot to take the fuel pump fuse out while I was taking the injectors out one evening. Took injectors in doors overnight, came out next day, opened the drivers door and heard the fuel pump prime followed by a strong smell of fuel

a few years ago, we had an old bay window camper. i went out to start her up after her winter lay up and could not get her to start. after a 5 mins of trying battery went flat. so i removed it to charge overnight then tried the next day. checked fuel was ok, checked spark plug leads were fitted ok so couldn't work out why she wouldn't start. battery went flat again so removed for overnight charge. next day i tried again and still no go. i gave up at this point and went to tidy garage out. after a few hours of spring cleaning the garage i noticed a rotor arm on one of the top shelves. then it hit me. i had removed said rotor arm the previous year to stop some scrote nicking my precious van. what a tit!

whilst doing an oil change on my mk2 at work one day, i poured 4 litres of castrol premium oil straight through the engine into the nearly full catch tank, cue lots of rags and an engine refilled with mostly old oil. the oil stain is still there to this day, 5 years on!

I was in a bit of a rush that day so threw them in , didnt bother clamping the hose just pushed the piston back , done it this way before thousands of times before  tbh ,never a problem,,until this one !

killed the master cylinder, and as her car was worth about 30 pence i ended scrapping it and buying her a 1.4 polo ! costly favour that was ..

i have done many stupid things when it comes to cars. but the funniest was a few years ago when i bought my second car (after 4 weeks of driving) a rover metro. it was quite dirty when i got it so the day after i got it  i washed it. I noticed that something was keyed in to the bonnet. on closer inspection it said wank!!!! that same weekend some silly old fart reversed into the wing and drove off!! so i was driving a metro, with a dented wing and wank on the bonnet for 10 months!!!! it was then when i tried to push a volvo backwards through the lanes that was when the metro died!!

Deicer on auxillary drive belts does not stop the squealing.  :lipsrsealed:

Fitted an old master cylinder back on (was proper clean in my defence). Struggled ages trying to solve this clutch issue, boss ordered up a slave in the end in desperation and still to this day struggles to believe how the slave was at fault, as I quickly replaced the master cylinder when he wasn't looking.

Done some nifty little things IMO on the road though, wired up my brothers Hyundai fuel pump to the sidelights to get us 120 miles home when the imobilizer packed in, had to bump start it but it got us home.

Wired up the heated seat button to the fans on the Chrysler in Scotland once, still is on there to this day, when it gets warm, just flick the switch (relay is a proper bastard to replace, still dreading one day doing the job).

Tied up some wire round the throttle body on my Golf when it snapped.

Towed a mates van backwards leaving tyre marks everywhere when he binned it into a bank and completely bent the passenger front suspension, towed it into another mates road.

Towed a mates van backwards leaving tyre marks everywhere when he binned it into a bank and completely bent the passenger front suspension, towed it into another mates road.

Posted on a forum about a crash that wasnt my fault and now everyone mocks my driving ability?

Yeah but my many real life friends regard me as a decent safe driver so i don't really care.

When i was 14 my old man was getting his classic Lincoln Continental ready for a show.I decided while he was out i would spend an hour jacking each wheel up and turning it so that all the hubcaps emblems/valves were in exactly the same position and would look much better for the show! :embarassed:

Somehow managed to wire my brothers stereo up on his Lotus Cortina to a coil feed or something.Everytime he put a tape on the faster he went the faster his tape played :nerd: To listen to his Trex he had to drive at about 45mph

When i bought my golf in March.. i gave it the quick once over checked the oil level etc... being lazy i decided i'd leave everything (Including oil change) to the garage as i'd booked it in for a service... Went on the motorway and accidently reached very high speeds *cough cough* dirty oil blocked the strainer and the crank shaft battered my engine to peices  :embarassed: I had to get a knew engine imported from Northern Ireland all because i was too busy to complete the basic checks and changes myself... Lesson learned the hard way

mine is using a jet wash. I jet washed my engine bay in my old saxo vts. it didn't start and cost be £150 for a new coil pack. A few months after that I went airborne on some back roads and the welds snapped in the boot, so you could see the rear torsion bar through the boot and half the wheels where in the arch.

I jet washed my mk3 16v with it on point and not fan. I took a lot of lacquer off

and buying a 8v gti

Not me but I work in a lane with three garages. Lad down the end one went past in a Nissan Cabster and braked fairly hard, front of the cab went flying forwards and he ended up facing the floor.

These cabs lift up for easy engine access, obviously wasn't clamped down properly, they are a biatch to do sometimes.

1. Took parents car out when I was little, drove loads of places the whole night without incident got back to house and couldn't reverse the car into the drive (didn't know you had to lift the lever beneath the gear knob) Spend hours panicing at the thought of what my mum would say and paid someone passing by a tenner to help me push it back into the drive. Which was a lot to a little kid lol.

2. Sprayed my cars headlights with the factory body paint. Pleased with myself at their gloss look but was subsequently flashed my drivers behind me for months as they thought my lights were off.

To be stupid and young again

A few years ago in my first car (1.3sr nova, dont judge me please it was standard but still a vaux!!) I was loading my boot one morning. Being young and dumb I thought it was a good idea to let it warm up to temp.

Problem was I started it from standing at the drivers door and failed to remember Id left it in reverse  cue car jumping back into nothing other than my house and bending my tailgate to a point it wouldnt close!!!!    :embarassed:

Never should have admitted this and have never started a car without my foot on clutch since!!

one of my mates did a simelar thing.

down the motorway the council had been doing work (one mate works for the council) and they decided it would be easier to just leave lots of wood (all decent brand new stuff) that they hadent used to just rot away/taken. my other mate was just starting a joinery buisness so one night they both went down and loaded the wood into one van and one car, two trips later and 4 vehicles full of wood he gets home and has it all put in the garage, then goes to reverse his stilo abarth about  1 meter further onto the drive, forgot he had rigger boots on, sat with legs out of the car, flicks the flappy paddel into reverse and presses the accelorator, goes flying back into the house, rear bumper shagged, rear arches shagged, boot shaggged, posssible twisted chasis  :lipsrsealed:

oh and he smashed his mams plant pot killing the sun flower at the same time
