Title: Car seems to accelarate by itself
Post by: golf1992 on 16 August 2011, 08:55

 Hello,

I'm from Spain, I have a 1992 GTI 2.0 Petrol Golf, on car start, also in first gear and when I stop the car in lights the car seems to accelarate or go to higher revolutions by itself, like if someone was pushing the gas pedal. I think it has to be to the mechanism that controls the fuel. I hear this is maybe some tube that is dirty or something, if is the case I would like to avoid a hefty mechanic bill and do it myself if is not that difficult.

If is the case of a tube, I would like to know where it is and how to proceed...I have a Haynes manual now, but it doesn't tell where it is, I've enclosed some pictures if someone is willing to download the photos and mark where should I look/check and upload them again I will apreciate it a lot.

 Thanks if anyone can help.(http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb350/golf1992/photo-1.jpg)

Check for vac leaks, there are a few vac lines,  brake servo line for instance, this is made of plastic and is common to split.   Also check the Idle valve isnt sticking and is clean and free from leaks,  Might also be worth cleaning throttle body.

 Howdy,

Thanks for the reply...but can you indicate where are those?

  Thanks.

Definitely check all the vacuum and breather pipes first, then as mentioned above clean the throttle body which is bolted onto the intake manifold.
In the first picture you have the idle stabilisation valve, disconnect that and flush it through with some petrol or carb cleaner then give it a squirt of wd40 or similar atterwards so that isn't running dry of any lubrication.
