im sure it is, but i'm holding onto hope that it's just dirt that needs cleaning out.
if it is rust, how do i take the wing off to treat it?

Get VW to sort it!! 12 year bodywork guarantee no??

Taken from the thread below...
Off the top of my head ive bound to have forgotton something
Rust checks.
1) Front arches were the liner rubs near the top of the arch, (the open cell foam spacer at the top of the wing does not help as it can hold water.)
2) Bottom of the wings near the door pillar were the wing bolts to the top of the sills. (design fault with arch liner meens rubbish gets in next to the strut and ends up in that corner.)
3) Top of the sill were it bolts to the bottom of the wing (same location as above but the sill top this time) As the robots at the factory would grip this location when moving the shell and could crack the paint. (effects early cars)
4) Bottom of the boot badge hole. Water sits in this location)
5) Jacking points on the sills, The sealent can be damaged when lifted on a wheels free ramp at the dealers or garage.
6) 18" Alloy wheel corrosion due to the polished design (corrosion known as white worm)
7) Wheel VW badges and also the earlier smooth boot VW badge also suffer white worm.

Haha, sorry Adam, everyone had covered the informative stuff, so I thought I'd ease the pain with some comedy!

If your car is an early one its a known issue your dealer should be able to find the TPI on it.

53 plate lol
think mine is the grand daddy of mk5's

Same spot where I have noticed rust on mine.
-
Known issue with early cars as it was a production fault, dealers should know all about it.

will it matter that i am the 3rd owner?

The dealer told me when my wheel arch corrosion was refused by VW (yesterday) that there might have been a slim chance of goodwill being granted, had I been my car's original owner. Sadly as I bought it at 2 years old, they felt that VW won't play ball. Nevertheless, I've taken up the case with VW Customer Services. I'm waiting to hear back - I'll let you know once I find out.
