Title: Track Tyres
Post by: mrDMH on 14 August 2011, 21:51
Hello All!

This is new area for me.. After visiting Ford Fair (boo hiss) and watching people leather it around the track, i'd really like to try it.

However, I currently have 19" Lambo Alloys, and somehow I don't feel that they would be appropriate for the track!!!

So what would you guys recommend for tyres/alloys/steelies for a second set for me to swap on when tracking?

Thanks,
Daniel

ps. sorry for being a newb!!

Haha - no bother.

In that case 'I'm out' (don't know much at all about track setup on them), but I'm sure someone else can help :)

You need to find the lightest and smallest diameter (the two are normally compatible) wheel that will fit your car, then fit either the evergreen Toyo R888s to those wheels or, an alternative 'for track' tyre.

Make sure your geometry is bang-on (and maybe add a cheeky -0.5degrees of camber if you can) and make sure you have plenty of meat on your tyres and away you go.  Talk to Hurdy about what his Golf5 set up was, because that stuck to the track like sh*t to a blanket.

Small, light wheels will probably have the biggest impact on your enjoyment of the day - you'll feel far more from the road and the car will react massively faster to steering inputs over your (presumably) hefty current hoops.  As an example original 'G60' multispoke wheels weigh in at around 12kg each.  My current (same size) track wheels come in around 6.6kg.

Cheers for your response guys!

So a geo is a must, I've found a website that talks about suspension setup, I have KW V3's so hopefully that'll make the setup easier.

I'll drop Hurdy a PM!

It doesn't say what weight they are, however, after speaking with Hurdy, he has recommened some really light weight wheels which I'm looking into now!

The CXRs are really nice, very popular on Westfields/Caterhams (where low weight is clearly a massive bonus), and the Pro Race 1.2s are decent too.

If you wanna get a bit more serious and you can get a rear anti roll bar that will help the handling quite a bit too, I have an Octavia (same platform as your Golf) and it feels like a bit of a tugboat - RARB should sharpen it up a bit and help with understeer.

No worries - I've not played with any handling stuff on my Octy so can't really help there, sorry about that.

Think there is a chap call Neil on here who has a Mk5 that he uses quite a lot on track, hopefully he'll see this thread and chime in!

We will see!! I'm so excited to get started. I live 2 mins from Santa pod so that'll be a good place to start I think

Track stuff is all about handling, wouldn't worry too much about blasting down Santa Pod, it'll just rape your clutch, tyres and driveshafts!

Where are you based? Picked up my Westfield from Sharnbrook, can't be far from you!

Just get weights on them all and go for the lightest.  The brands you're looking at should mean you're not buying sh*te.

If it's in use daily I would go for something like Michelin Cups, over dedicated track tyres.

No one like aquaplaning uncontrollably about in rain and the Michelins will last longer (although I suspect your wallet will feel raped after buying them).

This may help, it's got around 4.5k wheel weights so should get you in the right direction. Opens as and excel document.
