Title: Huge hole in air box?
Post by: DigitalDogg on 14 August 2011, 18:21

hi guys,

i've had holes drilled in my air box for a few years now with a K&N panel filter fitted, but was at a mates house today talking about drilled air boxes and he said he had a air box from a 8v with a hole cut out of it that i could have...

when he showed me it i thought... o sh!t... will that be ok on my car?

sorry about the blur'd photo
(http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab248/idogz/kjh.jpg)

is this hole to big?and will it just suck to much air in?

cheers

If you have an 8v, yes.
Hole might pull in hot air from strut tower area though :undecided:

Going to do me a new airbox soon, was going to try something a little different this time :lipsrsealed:

just fitted it and took up the road for a couple of miles  i was grining all the way  the sound was lovely, there is a big deferents from having just holes drilled, the car roars now but cant floor it in first gear, it just revs out

There is a big write up on this exact modification on Google.  I would say it is fine if you put a good direct feed to it.  On my VR6 I removed my fog light and took my direct air feed from there.......Will put pics up tomorrow.  Induction noise will be better and many have found that modding the airbox gives more power than an induction kit as the induction kit is exposed to heat soak.

i've just won a airbox on ebay and going to try and connect cold air feed from bumper vent, which pipe will be best for this? will it have to be heat proof?

cheers

Remove the drivers side fog light......Easy job.  From there you can house your direct feed. I dont have my camera on me but will have tomorrow so will take a few pics of how I have done it with a step by step guide for you

cheers  i have three airboxes now, one with holes drilled, one with a big hole cut out and the third im just going to try a direct feed with no holes drilled, then see which one will be best...

Wouldnt bother with removing the fog. Run the cold air feed to the lower bumper grille. Perfectly good there without sacrificing a fog light.

Having tried various routes and options for the cold air feed I'd say either opt for the lower bumper  vent but run the risk of hydrolocking in the winter or as I'm now running,  utilising the original wing opening minus all the plastic gubbins and restrictive airbox intake  pipe with a 3" duct pipe in its place.

thanks for letting me know about hydrolocking, i never knew about this and just googled it...

scary stuff
cheers

Firstly I removed my fog light then got a bit of mesh out of a skip.  I sprayed the mesh with 2 coats of primer then 4 coats of Dragon Green.  Also I found in another skip  (I love skips..... amazing what you can find!!)  a 3.5" diameter by 15" long hose, not got a clue what its original use was?!  Anyway I housed this where the fog light should be and took it directly to the intake of the airbox so a nice direct feed with hardly any bends and only needed 7" of the hose to be able to reach so a minimal intake of hose required.

I should of done a step by step guide but it is very easy to do.

Finishing look......

Lets be honest, as far as hydrolocking is concerned, if there is a massive puddle in the middle of the road, which is deep enough for this to happen, your not gonna be booting it at the time anyway. Your gonna be off the gas and going nice and slowly, therefore your air intake is pretty unlikely to suck it up. Fair enough though if you wanna be cautious, I asked the same question when I did mine. Just really dont see the point in sacrificing something for the sake of another as you would be doing by removing the fog. Do you have aircon? Dunno if it would work as I have aircon so wont fit on mine, but is there enough room between your rad and grille to do it?

I've been running mine from the lower bumper vent for over a year (one of my feeds anyway) and there is next to no chance of you hydrolocking your car.  The vent isnt on the floor anyway, it's at a sufficient height and as previously said, if you are stupid enough to go through a puddle that is big enough, ie a foot deep, at any kind of speed, you deserve to screw your car up.  It just wont happen.

Picture as well, that you need to suck up water with enough force to go all the way up the pipe (with an ID of roughly 70mm), into the airbox and then up through the filter and then into the Inlet air pipe and into the Manifold.  The surface area is too large to create a suction strong enough to suck up enough water to do any damage, let alone it getting through filter etc.

You would suck up less than what alot of people do when they steam clean their engines using the 'water trick' (do a search on here or clubgti) and neither I nor anyone else have had any adverse effects from that either.

Your foglight mod does however look pretty good.. much better than the horrible tube I've seen sticking out on some peoples motors, nicely done

I have air-con and the air intake pipe misses all the air-con pipes......Very straight forward fit.  I put a hairdryer on max setting for standard intake and felt the end of the pipe, then I tried a larger hose down the inner wing to the bottom grill , once again feeling the end of the hose to feel how much air was coming out.....Then I thought of the fog light mod'.....The hairdryer air was at its best as in force of air from the fog light thus me choosing that route.  As dennis10 said, I really did not want one of these big ports on the front of my car like you see on Corsa's, Saxo's etc

What I meant was that the feed may not fit behind the TOP/front grille. Aircon Rad etc leaves no room to get the feed straight there.
Mine went behind the mesh here -

No big trumpets like the usual chavs etc, just cable tied behind this. Not on at the moment though, as I had the same looking trunking as you, and it chewed into my aux belt. I'm not saying what you have done is sh!t! and I'm not trying to create an argument. I think what you have done looks good actually. I just wouldnt do it and loose my fog. Unless your a chav and running HIDs, the standard output on the headlights is pretty crap at the best of times. Fogs are an essential bit of kit imho.

EDIT:

You can also get these which lots of people are running (hope you dont mind BLU)

As said, loads of people are running with them and no one has reported any problems. Doubt they would be manufactured in the first place if it was a big issue.

You should see my airbox, it's far more butchered than that one! I also have fog light cold air intake, and never had a problem with hydrolocking.
