Title: Air Con/climate control questions
Post by: negawsklov on 14 August 2011, 11:56
Morning folks,

As our mk3 has no sunroof I've decided to add air con, I'm in negotations to buy a 99 plate A3 1.8t for our engine conversion and this obviously has air con set up on the engine. I've also just bought a climatronic head unit for the mk3. Now, can i use the air con stuff of the A3 to power it?  I understand I've got to take the dash out to install the relevant pipework etc.

I'm not fussed on air but mrs negawsklov is as we'll be going on a grand tour of europe in the car and spending a fair chunk of time in spain next year..

Before everyone says, buy one with air con I wont as the mk3 now feels part of the family and is going no where..

Cheers
Mike

Not that easy tbh.

You need the complete climate set up out of a mk3 and when I say complete I mean everything including the heater box / motor assembly, it may even be easier to buy a donor car to give you all the parts you need.

Hi Mike

I am not an air-con fan but have digital climate control in my car with freezing air-con.  If you can remove my air-con system and still leave me with a heater as in it gets warm for winter then that is fine by me.

Interesting to know if this can be done without pulling half the car to bits!  By the way, my car is a MK3 VR6.

Nope dash has to come out, major work VR6 will be no good really due to the differences.

Also no air con on a VR is not a wise move due to the heat soak into the cabin.

Thank you mate, interesting to know.

So having air-con on a VR is a very good thing?  I have had it on a few times but read air-con destroys the MPG and the MPG on a VR is bad anyway thus me leaving it off!

Yes it is a good thing to have, also you are only looking @ 1 or 2 mpg worse with it on.

I had a 92/j vr without air and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, cheers for the offer but you need to keep hold of it.

Thanks guys

I always thought it drained the MPG by some huge amount and reduced power as well.

Not by much tbh, on mine it is about 1mpg, and power wise nothing that you can notice.

Plus if you think about the extra wind resistance that is caused when you have your windows open rather than the aircon on i think it would be about the same

You can fit air con but as I said you need a donor car and swap everything over.

I did it on my Vectra and took around 3 days.
