Title: what a stupid way to build a car
Post by: bricey on 13 August 2011, 18:10
evening chaps,

right i set about doing my wishbone bushes and putting poly ones in there,
all way going well done the passenger side but had to replace the outer tie rod arm (dont ask)lol
so i jacked up the drivers side and undid the 3 bolts holding the wishbone to the hub and then moved to the front bolt and what is in the way of me getting that bolt out.......have a guess....no.. the SUMP.
now am i right in thinking the only way that bolt is coming out is if i drop the subframe?????
because there is no way on this planet that bolt is coming out????
cheers
james

I cant think for the life of me what the set up looks like on a Mk4, but quite a few cars have a similar situation, resolved by undoing the bolt, moving it out as far as possible, and hacksawing the bolt in half to remove, replace with a new bolt, fitted the other way round...

Being a 4motion i would imagine it's fairly crowded underneath, have you tried a search to see if there any exploded diagrams online?.

Same on my MK3.

Jack on the sump with a block of wood (not the car, support the car then jack up the engine) and I did it.

Can loosen engine mounts too.

That's not the 'correct' way, that's just the long way.

Well there is always a systematic way of doing things in a factory as that's build, but maintenance, there's nothing wrong with undoing engine mounts and moving the engine.
