As some may know last weekend I picked up this billy bargain of a mk3 GTI for myself so I could sign the mk2 GTD over to my missus. It was however missing quite a few bits, namely 3 arch trims, side skirts, speakers, speaker covers, badges, and it has 2 front wings the wrong colour. However it did come with loads of MOT, lowered 60mm, average mileage, early BBS VR6 wheels, and a rather sexy VR black leather interior. I didn't take any good pics of it as I got it so heres a few I took earlier since fitting side skirts (missing the usual strips), arch trims and GTI rear lights as it had non GTI ones on it.

All being well next week it'l have 2 new doors and 2 new wings (in the right colour) and I'l be swapping the suspension with the mk2 so it'l be a lot lower!

Looks a sound enough project base :afro:

Any opinons on wheel choice? Don't want to spend too much on it (I'm no scene queen), looking at spending £200-250 on wheels and tyres (mainly because the car doesn't owe me much more and I won't spend more on wheels than I paid for it ). Would like some TT wheels, but I'm not sure I want 17s. Also bare in mind it'l be on the deck too

You can get TT rims in 16", if you slamming it then 15" or 16" is the best choice.

But will they have balloon tyres?

Not really 195/50/15's or 195/45/16's are good choices and with the car slammed they will look fine.

Im putting the coilovers off the mk2 as we speak. Pics later if the rusty strut bolts dont beat me. Might have to raise them though what with the mk3 being heavier!
-
If you stick a fiver in the forum donation next week Tuesday and PM me your address, I'll send you the covers for those rear seat belts mate.
Good base though.
EDIT: Oh and speaker covers if you need.
-
Its alright mate I've got some mk2 rear seatbelts sat in my garage that I'm gonna rape for its covers, And I've bought a full set of standard speakers and speaker covers too  Just getting my priorities right, lows first!
-
My mk3 has hit new lows  However it is suffering with some serious tyre to arch contact so I'l have to get the hacksaw to my arches tomorrow

Much better! Surprised your raping the Mk2 for this though, I take it its nearing the end of its life!?
-
Nowhere near, the body has seen better days but its barely run in at 221k
I'm only raping it for the coilovers cuz she wanted the mk2 raising anyway and I gave her the mk2 on the condition I had the coilovers back
-
Who's got lows? You got fcuking lows!
That is looking so much better!
In regards to selling my wheels mate, i would but shipping would be a b!tch! Cost me £80 to get the TT Speedlines sent over

Actually its nowhere near low enough for my standards. If I get chance tomorrow after hacking the arches its going down more. The mk2's subframe was literally half an inch from tarmac, and this has loads of room under the subframe and I've not even adjusted them since swapping them from the GTD, so I guess the GTD lump is heavier than the 2E. I also need some different wheels, these have loads of tread on the tyres so I'm not changing them, but 205/50s are too big! I seriously cannot turn the steering wheel much at all without nearly ripping the arch trims off. I do like the fact it looks so much like a VR6 though, but I'm no wannabe. I'd even swap the wheels for a set of longbeaches just to get low and still be able to drive the damn thing
Until I get new wings I might have a butchers at my stockpile of vinyls and see if I have anything close to mystic blue just so it doesn't look so ratty!
-
Theres been lower adi. Roll the arches. Am running 205/50s on my mk2 and it doesnt touch the arch
-
Switch to 195/50/15's, will give you loads more room
-
For the price of another set of tyres I could get another set of wheels so that seems like the sensible option
-
Looking forward to seeing this progress
-
Me too, but I've got to swap my wheels for something else pronto, I've raised the front coilies 10mm to prevent some scrubbage, its not as bad now, but still not good, the tyres catch the chassis on full lock, and my tracking is out so badly I've got both wheels toeing out and one has more positive camber than the other to stop it catching the coilover! Its just a disaster at the mo! I'm starting to wish I'd just left the 60mm springs on till I found some o0ther wheels now

I'm a proper tight wad when it comes to cars, especially ones like this. The car only cost me £290, and I've only spent £25 on it so far, and for that I got 2 sets of GTI arch trims, side skirts (but missing the usual bits), a glovebox handle, GTI rear lights, dash fit rear electric window switches, dizzy cap, 6 speakers, 6 speaker covers and a rear golf GTI badge. I try not to ever lose money on a car, and the secret to that is get the best you can for as little as possible and wait for the bargain parts
