Got around £150 to play with as I want some lighting gear as well.
Sigma 70-300mm (http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-sigma-70-300mm-f4-5-6-macro-dg-lens-canon-fit/p1008573)
Posher Sigma 70-300mm (http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-sigma-70-300mm-f4-5-6-apo-macro-super-dg-lens-canon-fit/p1008569)
Tamron 70-300mm (http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-tamron-70-300mm-f4-5-6-di-ld-macro-lens-canon-fit/p1013817)
Cheapo Canon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-75-300mm-4-0-5-6-III-Lens/dp/B00005K47Y/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1313098110&sr=1-3)
Not sure if the posher Sigma is worth the extra £££ over the 'standard' one. Especially as it's over budget.
Confused of Kent.
-
i bought one of the tamron 70-300's a while back for under 100 quid, is an ok lense for the money with the main downside being sharpness in lower light conditions due to no VR
-
depends how much you're going to be using it, as a rule of thumb the more expensive glass will give you better images, however a cheap lens can still produce comparable images with some PS / ACR tweaking as both the sigmal lenses are 4-5.6 I'd probably go for the cheaper and put the saving into some other stuff.
the APO lens will probably give you better contrast than the non but this could be ramped up in post processing.
what you really want is;

-
Yeah because that'd fit my camera...
-
I've got the APO Sigma and really like it.
Nick
-
Shhh Nick you are not helping. :lipsrsealed:
The plans for a new lens may wait till next month now.
-
May chuck this into the equation
http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-canon-ef-s-55-250mm-f4-5-6-is-ii-lens/p1526052
As I may be able to extend my budget, as when I get another body I don't want to have to buy better lenses.
Can my 1000d mount an EF-S lense?!
-
I had a 55-250mm lens as the first telephoto lens I bought. Sadly it was stolen, with my 400D just before we left Bristol.
I now have a 70-300mm lens, which is giving significantly better results in my mind - although I didn't spend as much time with the 55-250mm lens as I have with the 70-300mm unit.
I know it's outside budget, but it's glass and you should only be buying that once (unlike a body)... must stop oggling L-series 70-200mm lenses
-
You got a link to this one then DH?
My budget could be raised to find the right glass.
-
L series are serious bucks
-
L series are serious bucks
L series and N (Nano Crystal Coat (Nikon / Nikkor) are worth the money though, better contrast, sharper images, quicker focus, faster aperture, less artefacts etc
I'm currently saving for the 70-200 f/2.8 and probably the TC-20E III (2 x tele-converter)
-
Be a long time before I can drop that kinda dosh on a lense!

This is the lens:

My brother visited me in London last weekend and brought a (borrowed) L series 100-400 and took this:
The full size image is 130megapixels cos it's made up of many shots from his 7D.
He also took this with it:

Awesome bit of glass, but for that price it should be.
-
Think I'm going to buy the one you have DH :afro:
Just have to sit wait and bide my time and wait for a deal to pop up on it as it's soo over budget!
-
Or possibly this one, thoughts?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-EF-S-55-250mm-4-5-6-Lens/dp/B0056E49MK/ref=lh_ni_t
Still got IS but a shorter focal length.
-
The 70-300 is much better built and faster - always good for anything moving.
This was shot on my 70-300mm - first video I've shot with it - practicing panning with my monopod:

Thanks DH. Guess I'll keep on saving, found th lense you have for £350 which doesn't seem too bad.
-
Tempting!

That's only a couple of quid cheaper than other places. The lack of IS would be a concern with a telephoto.
If you haven't seen this site, you should, a comparison site for cameras and lens prices, here's the prices for that lens:
http://camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod32.html (http://camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod32.html)
And the best price on that 55-250 is £209:

How about:

L series IS
99p with just over 2 days left
-
Sold for £760 was just down the road too. Still way out of my price range!
-
How about:
PHWOAR.
Although I can see having a 300mm prime lens might be something of a PITA.... ah - what I'm shooting doesn't fit in the frame. Hang on while I walk a few hundred metres away to make it fit.
-
The guy my brother borrowed the Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens is selling it for £800. Which considering the list price (around £1200), it's a bargain.
-
I've just bought a 70-200mm f4 L USM

It was cheap....honest :lipsrsealed:
I need a better body now

Investing in good glass is always worth it. You'll keep it longer than you'll keep the body.
DH was selling his 500D... that would be a step up.
-
Can't afford it yet, may look at a 7D in a few months. But we will wait and see
-
Personally I would work up. Going from a 1000D to a 7D is a huge leap.
I biggest jump I would go for is from the 1000D to a 40/50/60D.
The 40D is good and can be had for £400 now, the 50D is hardly worth it, not much of an improvement over the 40D, but the 60D is worth it.
-
I'd go for a 7D.
The video is what makes it, but it's also weather-sealed to 1D-standard, so it should be extremely durable.
I would go 7D way over 60D, especially as the 60D swapped from alloy body (as per 40D and 50D) to plastic body. It also has that stupid waggly 'you will break me off' screen on the back.
Can you tell I've spent a while thinking about my next camera body?
-
We shall see, want to futureproof a bit don't wanna buy to buy again
-
We shall see, want to futureproof a bit don't wanna buy to buy again
bodies are meant to last / replaced about 3 years, if you're investing you want to invest in glass.
It also has that stupid waggly 'you will break me off' screen on the back.
+1
the 60D looks and feels like a stupid consumer POS something you would expect to see a panasonic or fuji sticker on the front.
The only real choice at that sort of price point is D7000 or D800 when Nikon release it

As I said, the body is still a fair way off, not changing over to Nikon now! Want to get a few other lenses as well. All in good time.
-
not changing over to Nikon now!
deep down you want a Nikon and a PC

Sounds like a fools combo

Nah, that's just the Nikon element shining though.
