Title: 1990 jetta 16v gti tapping noise
Post by: mpgscott on 15 April 2005, 15:53
Hi,

Have a strange noise coming from the bottom end i think (more noticable with my head close to the bumper) at around 2500rpm.

Now i have checked the timing and at idle it is 6 deg btdc which is correct i think.

Have tried running car quickly with alternator belt off so its not the water pump.

I have recently had to replace two valves as the cars timing belt had slipped hence my reason for getting it cheap.  Head and cams all in very good order car had only done 90k fdsh.  only very slight bend in two inlet valve as car was at tick over when the belt slipped.

The noise is only at 2500rpm.

I am thinking crankshaft bearings does anyone have any ideas before another strip down.

engine starts and runs fine no smoke and no erratic idle runs through the revs fine also.

Many thanks
