Post by: danhock on 16 September 2003, 09:15
Picked up my Golf cabrio last night...

Just wondering what Spec it is...

Its 1988 E Reg.

I was abit suprised to see a DOHC 16V engine. is this normal?

You've just bought the cabrio for ?500 and now you have found a 16V lump under the bonnet.......you lucky lucky ' :o :o :o'.
Sounds like someone in the past has stuffed a 16V lump under the bonnet to replace the 8V unit.

actually it's a precious metal, usually worn as jewellery, but can be utalised in electronic equipment, pirates teeth, or as a basis for the relationship between different currencies

Yes its a Cabrio and yes its a 16v DOHC engine.... Garage last night told me its a 2.0L. Can that be right???

Had it on the Ramps and noticed:
Custom built Stainless steel longlife exhaust...
Yellow Shocks (look like Eibach)
No rust or welding on sills or anywhere!!

Its got a 5 speed box too.

Do i qualify for bargain of the year?

Aha now that would be telling. No seriously I picked this up at the weekend:-

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=2004;start=0

Cost me ?500 less than yours.  ;D
Actually thats not altogether true as I had to tow it back so I did incur a ?15 charge for the use of an A frame and tailboard, plus I did buy the guy a few beers.
Still an absolute bargain. I have had a look underneath it now and the chassis has no rot in the usual places.......can't believe it!  :o

Ive a couple of bits need sorting... Hand brak doesnt lock off and the pipe that leads to the pertol tank has a hole in it!!

Also the seats are not good...

Know anywhere i can get this all sorted? I live in Wiltshire..

Hand brake doesn't lock off? do you mean its not releasing or not holding?

You'll need to replace the fuel filler pipe. Its a common problem as all the mud etc., sprays up from the rear wheel onto it causing it to rust through.
You can get replacement fuel filler pipes and if you look hard enough you'll come across the odd stainless one that Autocavan used to sell. Not aware of anyone that manufactures the stainless one anymore.

Seats bolster wear is common too. You'll have to keep your eyes open for a good set.
Does anyone know if its possible to buy the bolster 'foam' from VW and for that matter the cover?

Aaah the usual problems!!!!

You can get any of the seat bits from VW anymore, just have to hunt around and see what you can find!!!

Rich, what did you actually pay for that white mk1?? I reckon you may have had an even better bargain than I got with the Campaign.

I didn't pay anything.........just bought the guy a couple of beers.
He was going to scrap it........I just stepped in to prevent it going to the scrappy.

Nice one  ;D  Does the car run?

No, fuel pump is siezed. It turns over OK. Its been sat in a garage for 5 years. I only bought it for spares but have subsequently found that it is far too good to scrap.
Unfortunately I simply don't have any time to spend on it at the moment, so it will be mothballed for now. Its got that 4 into 2 exhaust manifold that I have been after for the cabrio so it was worth getting for that alone.

Don't knock it, some manufacturers charge extra for removable seating!! ;)

Post by: danhock on 19 September 2003, 12:40
can you get decent leather seats for these?
Title: Re:What is it?
Post by: AdamB on 19 September 2003, 12:54
I saw a sportline (like mine) with black leather seating, but it didnt look right, I prefered my recaro set up. Rich has nice leather in his though. The scirroco storm leather interior fits in it I think, but you'de be hard pushed to find one. If the seats are ok, why not get them reupholstered - may work out cheaper, and at least they will be new.
