The only thing i know about diesels is what Clarkson says on Top Gear, It marks you out as a cheapskate, sell it and buy a petrol car, dunno if thats any use to you?

How long the glow plugs come on for depends on the temperature of the engine. If the engine is hot the glow plugs might not come on at all. Don't know a lot about diesels but it could it be leaking injectors?

I always thought that you did not turn the car on whilst the glow plug was lit. you waited for it to go out and then start.

The Glow Plugs should not be needed if the engine is warm.

How long do you have to wait before the engine will start ?

Does the engine turn over ?

Firstly Glen,i have two mk2  golf GTI 8 valves,( pb engines). My daily driver 89' has leather xm electric seats, audi vdo gauges mounted in the centre consoul, smoothed and wiperless rear tail gate ,with the lock controled from the cab,big bumpers and meshed grill.Electric windows, remote central locking,Some fancy 10 stack cd thing(for the wife).A stainless steel scorpion exhaust system,k@n panell filter, extra air flow induction to the air box.Eibach springs with bilstien shocks, imported rallye 15'' winter steels with goodridge rubber and im in the procsess of fitting power steering. The car does 0-60 in 8.2 and 125mph....Oh and a baby seat for my daughter! The other gti is just for messing about in.
A mr simon  cooper lives up the road from me and has a diesel mk2 tdi that does 0-60n in5.29 and0-100 in14.20!#

The problem is that once you have driven the car and come back to it(say an hour later, which would need the glow pugs to be heated),the glow light should still light-then go out for you to turn over the engine. My light doesnt come back on,and the car wont start. But turns over.
Ive checked the relay and thats fine!!!

Thanks for the sensible posts!

Are the glowplugs linked to the coolant temp sender?

The glowplugs operate from a relay that warms them for say ten seconds, ALWAYS wait for the glowplug light to go out or you'll knacker the glowplugs.

I would check for a temperature sensor that determines when the glowplugs relay work, this may be preventing the car from starting.

Other than that not really sure, diesels aren't my bag.

Yeah, ive been told to check for a temp sender on the head which can be over ridden
Cheers

if your engine has only been stopped for an hour or so it shouldnt need glow plugs(whats your mileage/engine condition)but it sounds like your glow relay/timer ???
Title: Your door could be the problem !!
Post by: DieselMonkey on 21 September 2003, 15:28
As you may know, when cold (engine temp below 60), the glow plugs will automatically come on as soon as the door is unlocked and opened (although no light comes on the dash)..... this feature is only on the TD and TDi's, not simply D... but should be on your TD.

So check the wiring that concerns this feature. Other than this, the plugs wont come on if the engine is up to temperature, so if it wont start in this instance i would suspect an injection problem.... when cold the inj. pump has a cold start boost device as well as the plugs to aid starting. So it could be this as well, depending on its age, this device is operated automatically by a sensor but pulled / released by a seloniod at the back of the pump, just above glow plug no. 1...... check this also. If the engine has 100K +, pull the injectors and have them tested.

It might start ok in cold because the heater plugs help starting (if an injector problem), but when warmed up and they dont come on, injection pressure alone might not be enough to start.. this would be a problem with the injectors, not electrics at all.

If there is an injector leaking, i.e, wetting the cylinder - only dribbling the fuel in and not cracking to the correct pressure then there would be a bit of black smoke on acceleration and your oil would degrade sooner. Would also cause carbon build up on the cylinder head and piston tops quickly. If this has occured, fix injectors (?100 max for 4 Bosch inj.) and then add Millers Diesel power plus to the fuel system to help remove some of the carbon build up.

Check these things and let me know what you discover. ;)
