Title: Alternator problem.
Post by: molegti on 09 August 2011, 17:19
The battery light doesn't go out on the dash when I start the engine. So far I've cleaned the contacts and replaced the voltage regulator / brush unit. Im getting around 12v when the engine is off and into the high 13's when its running so it is charging. When the engine starts the light dims but doesn't go out, it makes no difference if I rev the engine.

I have done as search but the only answers seemed to be where the alternator wasn't charging at all.

Any ideas?

with engine at idle you should see minimum 14v across battery terminals with nothing switched on mate, make sure you have good contacts on the negative wires mate but i would of just exchanged the alternator complete

Thanks, I found your post. It shouldn't be the regulator as its new, Ill try cleaning the earths and test the voltage straight off the alternator instead of across the battery. That should at least eliminate the cabling being at fault. Mark 3 golf cables dont seem to be a bad idea, in fact I think theres one at my local scrappy.
