Title: surprised at how well the fabia vrs goes
Post by: dragongreengolfgti on 08 August 2011, 22:42
Earlier, on my race track  i seen a fabia vrs in lime green  come up behind me and then overtake  so i dropped down a gear and gave it a bit of beans to my surprise i wasn't gaining much at all upto about 110  half way round the course is a roundabout and then a long straight after. So popped it into second at this point im right behind him and lets just say he was pulling away quite well even in 3rd still pulling and a litte in forth i couldn't gain anything untill 130 at which point i think he ran out of puff  but fair play they do go well not sure if it was standard or not as usually remapped diesels chug out smoke which this didn't. However then again my car isn't running spot on at the mo either due to the exhaust falling off and now tied on  soon to be rectified  Think more power is on the cards for me though  :lipsrsealed: i know people will say well it should do that your quite right i didn't realise untill i just read about them how well they actually perform etc it did shock me as i never really bothered about them before  anyway thought i'd share a story about my experience today.

They aren't that slow either.
Mine with a tuning box on could hold mapped S3s off to well the wrong side of 100.
They can't look at an S3 off the line...but off a roundabout in 2nd or 3rd, they go like hell.

S3 are not that fast either tho in standard form, my mate has had 6!!! that haldex is way too heavy, LCR is faster, put that against a valver and it is Bye bye time.. but that said i still cant imagine a 16v mk3 keeping up at roundabouts tbh unless S3 driver was my mum or similar

iv recently sold a 16v mk3, and im not gonna lie, it was not much different to my old 8v lump in terms of performance  (and its not the only valver iv had either)

They really are not that fast - especially by todays standard. as i say the only modifications id carry out is what my mate Russ has done (Tshirt2K on here) and he has bolted a Turbo to his

in a nutshell, a fabia VRS is light / day faster IMO

I've owned a fabia tdi in the past, it was listed as 100hp but has loads of torque. I saw 140mph on a track day and once off the line it was quick. My mate had a vrs, the older shape, chipped to 180hp with 450nm of torque, it ate tyres and spun wheels in 3rd in the dry. Very very quick!

The mk 3 golfs are slow old barges!

Yawn.  Everything's now a 'how many BHP I have' competition, is it?

I will guarantee his R32 would be faster than your Golf in the damp and the wet.

And my Golf would be faster than both as it's much lighter and 4WD.

Go to a proper track and come back with some lap times, buffer-boy.

Also factor in the driver and how much bottle and ability they have!
Mind you tracks are easy to drive on! Huge wide corners and nothing coming the other way!

He had a remapped mk6 would have probably been quicker than yours from rolling. Not sure though, and dont really care
R32's are not for racing anyway, there for enjoying

People get too hung up on peak power figures. There is a lot more when in its on the road, an R32 is brutal from low down and doesn't lose anything to the redline.
There were cars quicker, but i was never caught off guard due to all rev power (and DSG) lol

What you mean is it has large amounts of low down torque.

exactly... most people are happy to look at the weight and power of the R32 and then decide its slow.

have a quick look at TG powerlap times to see how it handed the GTI and ED30 their a$$ on a plate*

* and these are dry laptimes we are talking also. make the track wet and neither of the 2 cars mentioned would get within 5secs of the r32 on a relatively small track.

So how much bhp/torque is your Mk2 ABF running?

I don't understand this lack of power thing?
The R32 has 240bhp, that's a pretty reasonable output for a small hatch, not to mention the amount of low down torque it will have.
The power figures are true tested, unlike some figures quoted around this forum, which really belong in fairy land

even the mk4 with the updated software (not a remap) gets 247

People get too hung up on peak power figures.

Very true. There's too many people going on about the BHP of their car, but as you said, BHP is only a peak power.

They don't seem to look at torque, how power is delivered, where it is. Potentially, a car with less BHP could well be the quickest one, even if the weights are the same.

i see we still like to travel in straight lines only.. get dizzy spinning those decks do we?

I have a mk6 gti revod atm.. and a mazda3 mps as a reserve car. If you want to go in striaght lines then I would happily turn up with the mazda and its 300+ bhp. Alternatiely we can visit a track and i will bring the GTI. Either way I dont think I would meet with a kid to prove a point... everyone gets a point in the willy waving club

In all seriousness, if it's the new style VRS he came across then it is quite quick - especially given that to most people it's quite a standard looking hatch. It's certainly no Focus RS wannabe.

As for the willy waving competition... I think Gilly has made the best point (although it's not the point he was making).

I have a mk6 gti revod atm.. and a mazda3 mps as a reserve car. If you want to go in striaght lines then I would happily turn up with the mazda and its 300+ bhp. More horsepower isn't always better. That's why I'm presuming the MPS is for straight line fun and the GTI for the track.

Going back to the OP again, in the situation of trying to catch another car between roundabouts (on the track obviously), there's no hard and fast rule about what car is quicker. High end horsepower could be beaten by low to mid range torque. A more powerful FWD could be beaten by 4wd traction but then a powerful buy heavy car could be beaten by something lighter and nippier.

Interesting review of the vRS in Auto Express which just landed on my door mat. They quite like it. But it's not until you flick further on and read the Leon Cupra R / Megane 250 / Mazda 3 MPS reviews that things get curious.

They recorded a 0-60 time on the vRS of 6.9 seconds, compared to 6.8 / 7.0 / 7.1 for the Cupra R / Megane / Mazda.

Then 6.6s 30-70mph compared to 5.9 / 6.3 / 6.1.

30-50mph in 3rd was 2.9s compared to 2.9 / 2.7 / 3.1
50 -70mph in 5th was 5.7s compared to 5.4 / 4.9 / 5.0

I'm more than a little surprised!! It would seem that apart from lacking a bit of grunt, the vRS would not disgrace itself against bigger cars costing up to £9k more.

I would guess that in real life the DSG would make the 0-60 much easier in the Fabia.

I think like the older vRS this could well be a wolf in sheep's clothing. I'm looking forward to a test drive.

The Mazda in question is presumably the MPS to be giving those performance figures. The other cars are the Seat Cupra R (265hp) and the Megane RS250.

One dig in a petrol station and a wall in 18 months driving isnt bad imo with the miles I do. Nd the fact I hit diesel.

Had to correct myself quite sharply and brown trousers when the rear wishbone bush decided to detach itself from the wishbone while hammering it round a roundabout.

I'm sure there are many more on here and else where in the world that have managed more than 18 months without incident and most importantly not being the person at fault if they have been in an RTA.

Eh?  You really don't take any form of criticism well, do you.

That comment is basically 'your Mum....' but wrapped slightly differently.

Your driving record stinks (as mine did at your age).  You'd probably bin a Skyline before you got to the showing off point.  if you did get to showing off you'd bin it approximately just after saying 'watch this'.  Maybe think about posting less bluster and denial?

Please try and remember lots of us still consider you a minor, so try and post like an adult on here occasionally, instead of confirming our expectations in virtually every post?

You don't know my driving record.

FYI I've driven a few GTR's now.

I don't show off while driving other peoples cars or on the roads so I think you're quite wrong on that point. :)

Criticism I'm fine with, I just don't like some members constantly trying to give some high and mighty remarks and I really can't be bothered to come up with a decent reply.

That's all, have a nice day. :)
