Title: Freeing up an 8v GTI mk3?
Post by: tsr_adi on 07 August 2011, 18:38
OK so I've bought a mk3 8v GTI, and I'm well aware they're a bit underpowered! In the past I've fitted a decat to an Ibiza GTI with this engine and it did help reducing the engines nasty mid range flat spot, but I'm wondering if theres anything else I can do without breaking the bank to free it up a bit? Its been sat for a while so a good service is in order as well. I've heard of people putting mk2 digifant cams into them as they're not so eco-minded, will this help also?

Yep mk2 digi cam, panel filter and cold air feed.

What kind of gains should I expect from the above plus a de-cat? And will it pull strongly through the revs like a mk2 digi would?

5bhp to 10bhp and yes will help its response and how it feels

Being an early one it will / may be a 2e, AGG was 1996 onwards

It would appear I have a 2E, or so it says on the sticker on the cambelt cover anyway. Do the above tuning tips still apply?

Yes it will but I believe you need some machining done.
