Hi all i have a 1996 MK3 Golf gti anni 8V coverd 165000 miles or there abouts, was on the motor way earlier (about a 100 mile round trip) and all of a suden it felt like i hit some thing and the gearbox started to make a bad grinding noise so pulled over and that and it seemd fine, when i eventualy got home it was much worse....its when its in gear but im not pressing the throttle it grinds really badly! so popped the oil level plug out and theres no oil (its all pissed over the place!) and there was loads of metal swarf in the bottom...basicaly is my only option a refurb?
cheers
Matt

same happened to mine, (check my project) http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=184676.50 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=184676.50) halfway down the page. youve most likely poped a diff (VERY COMMON) you will need to get a used gbox (if diff has poped) and if you want get the rivets drilled out and buy a bolt kit. thats the reason why there aint no oil left unless there was no oil in the 1st place, get the car jacked up and look at the back underneath of the gearbox and if theres a hole in the casing then diff has gone.
p.s that box is worthless just scrap value as theres a hole in the housing now. you need to source a used one and if you want install a bolt kit (try mad4wv's his a mate of mine who breaks mk3's and i think he has an 8v box aswel)
